Bill Walker leaves Cape Cod as one of its most accomplished descendants

CHATHAM, Mass. — As he looked around Veterans Field on a hot morning in the middle of June, one last time before leaving for his next adventure, Bill Walker beamed with pride. After a few decades residing on Cape Cod, he and his wife of 64 years, Janet, were packed up and ready to move to Virginia.

Walker is a much different man now than he was when he last left the Cape for the Old Dominion State. It was 1958, and Walker had just finished his second season playing outfield for the Chatham town team in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Then, he was wide-eyed and eager to pursue a law degree from the University of Virginia. But life has since flown by for the 87-year-old...

CHATHAM, Mass. — The first year of the Dennis Cook managerial era brought both soaring highs and steep lows for the Anglers. Periods where Chatham held the best offense in the Cape Cod Baseball League were alternated with stretches where it struggled to hit much at all. That inconsistency led to a season where the Anglers won 17 games, missing the CCBL playoffs.

But when Cook took the Chatham job, his goals were simple. He wanted to get the Anglers to play hard, help them become better players and teach them how to conduct themselves as professionals. As a former 15-year Major League Baseball veteran, Cook has a wealth of experience when it comes to the latter.
