Make It Four Straight W's, Anglers Sweep Doubleheader
MAke it four in a row for the Anglers after taking both games of a doubleheader with the Bourne Braves at Veterans Field. Chatham took the first game 5-2 and the second game 5-4. Although the first game was in Chatham, the Anglers were actually the visiting team as the first game was a makeup of the July 23 rainout in Bourne. The Anglers got off to a quick start against Bourne starter Mike Morin (UNC) as Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt) took the righty deep to right field for a two-run home run in the top of the first, his fourth home run of the season.

Westlake's home run was all Chatham starter Mike Dennhardt (Boston College) needed as he picked up his second win of the season. Dennhardt limited the Braves to just one run on two hits in his six innings, striking out seven batters. Dennhardt had a no-hitter through five innings before Creede Simpson (Wichita State) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right field. Simpson would then come around to score on a double to right by Jason Coats (TCU).

The Anglers broke through with three runs in the top of the sixth inning off of Morin and reliever R.C. Orlan (UNC). Mark Ginther (Oklahoma State) scored on an error, while with the bases loaded, Riley Reynolds (Vanderbilt) drove in a run with a walk and Jason Martin (San Jose State) got hit by a pitch to make it 5-0.

The Braves loaded the bases with no outs against Chatham reliever Aaron Gates (Pepperdine) in the bottom of the seventh, but could only score one run as Matt Brazis (Boston College) came on to get the final three outs, picking up his third save of the season.

The Anglers broke out for five more runs in the second game, on their way to a 5-4 victory. The Braves kicked things off in the top of the first, posting two runs off of Chatham starter Marc Zecchino (Va. Tech) after Jason Coats (TCU) reached on an error by Anglers' shortstop Joe DePinto (USC), followed by a two-run home run in the next at-bat by Bourne third baseman Travis Shaw (Kent St.) to put the Braves up 2-0.

Chatham would not play from behind for long, roaring back in the home half of the inning with two consecutive singles off of starter Devin Jones (Mississippi St.) to lead things off. Both Jason Martin (San Jose St.) and Beau Amaral (UCLA) would execute the double steal before Martin would be brought home on a passed ball and Amaral was brought home on a wild pitch to tie the score 2-2.

The Anglers would pour on the offense in the next inning with Chatham catcher Phil Pohl (Clemson) singling to lead off the inning, and picking up his first stolen base of the season. Martin would get on board after being hit by a pitch for the second consecutive game, followed by a single in the next at-bat from Amaral. That would end the day for Jones, yielding to reliever Michael Dimock (Wake Forest), who gave up a two-run single in the next at-bat to Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt) to put the Anglers up 4-2. One more run would come across in the inning when third baseman Mark Ginther (Oklahoma St.) singled in the next at-bat to score Amaral, putting Chatham up 5-2.

The Braves would post two more runs in the fifth off of Zecchino, with designated hitter Cody Martin (Chipola JC) walking to lead off the inning. A double three batters later by second baseman Zack MacPhee (Arizona St.) would put two men in scoring position, before Coats would double in the next at-bat to bring the Chatham lead to one. Phil Schreiber (Iowa) would be brought on in relief of Zecchino to close out the fifth, and work a perfect sixth. Zack Jones (San Jose St.) would come on to work the seventh, and deal another perfect frame to close out the contest and give the Anglers the doubleheader sweep. Chathams record now stands at 16-18-1, two games behind Orleans for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.

The Anglers get a day off Wednesday for the All Star Game in Boston before heading to Brewster on Thursday to take on the ailing Whitecaps, who have lost five of their last six games, two of those coming at the hands of the boys in blue. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm, with the broadcast kicking off at 4:40pm with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show.
