Game Recap

The Chatham A's kicked off the 2003 Cape League season at Whitehouse Field in Harwich. It was a foggy, wet, and soggy night at the ballpark, but despite the weather, each team gave their fans a good showing of what the Cape League is all about. This game was dominant by each pitcher. As Justin Hedrick (Northeastern) started on the mound for the Mariners going 6 2/3 innings pitched, giving up 4 hits, 1 earned run, walking 3, and recorded 9 K's for the evening. Chatham started Chris Lambert (Boston College) who gave the A's a great outing, he ended up with a no decsion for his Cape debut throwing 5 complete innings, only surrending 1 hit and 1 run unearned, Lambert walked 3 as well and racked up 7 strikeouts. The 15 outs Lambert recorded 8 ground balls and 7 K's, very impressive for this youngster, he should be a player to watch this season. But each of these pitchers handed the game off to their teammates and the umpires, who made the final decision on a bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, 2-2 fastball from A's pitcher Ross Ohlendorf (Princeton) which seemed to get Mariner's Brad McCann (Clemson) for a check-swing strike three, but the umpires ruled differently which brought the count to 3-2. Ohlendorf came with another heater but McCann held up for which was clearly ball four and McCann got the game-winning RBI as Mark Reynolds (Virginia) walked acrosss the plate to give Harwich a 3-2 victory over Chatham in the 2003 season opener. Key Players: Chatham - Klosterman (2 for 5) SB - Hackney (1 for 2) 2 BB, 1 R - Lambert (5 IP, 7 K, 1 H, 3 BB, 0 ER) Harwich -Chuck (1 for 2, BB, SB, SH) -Reyonlds (1 for 2, 1 R, BB, SH) -McCann (GW RBI BB)

Game Recap

For Chatham's home opener, the A's starting pitcher James Avery (Niagra) easily took the spotlight. He recorded the victory, while pitching a splendid game, going 6 complete innings, giving up only 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 walks, and had 5 strikeouts. As the offense for Chatham was provided by their first five batters, Klosterman (Vanderbilt), Ingold (Wake Forest), Frazier (Rutgers), Lahey (Princeton), and Anderson (U.C. Irvine) respectively. The five hitters went 5 for 16, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI's, 1 SB, and 1 sac fly. That was all the A's needed to defeat the visiting Falmouth Commodores 4-0, bringing the A's at an even record of 1-1. Key Players: Falmouth -Slayden (1 for 3, BB) -Anderson (2 BB, SB) Chatham -Klosterman (1 for 2, 2 R, SB) -Ingold (1 for 4, 1 R, 2 RBI) -Getz (1 for 3, 1 R) -Avery (6 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K)

Game Recap

The A's fly pass the Cardinals as Glenn Swanson (U.C. Irvine) composed himself very well on the mound for Chatham. Swanson picked up the win, as he pitched a solid 6 innings, he only gave up 1 run while stricking out 5. He received a little help from his friends on defense, as the A's played flawless in the field. They provided plenty of offense with Ben Ingold and Jeff Frazier leading the way with two hits each and knocking in 5 runs between the two of them. For Orleans and their offense, they just couldn't capitalize on the 8 hits they had in the game. Chatham's veteran relief pitcher Adam Yates came in for the seventh and eighth innings and performed exactly how you want a middle man to perform. Yates pitched 2 full innings, 2 K's, 2 Hits which converted into 2 double play balls, 0 walks, and 0 Runs). He then turned it over to Neil Jamison (Long Beach State) who shut the door for the A's in the ninth. Which gave Chatham their second victory in just their third game of this 2003 season. Key Players: Orleans -Nicolas (2 for 3, HR, 2B) -Roberson (2 for 4) -Lenoir (2 for 4) Chatham -Ingold (2 for 3, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB) -Frazier (2 for 4, 2B, 3 RBI, SB) -Witt (1 for 3, 1 R, 1 SH)

Game Recap

Brewster's Phillip Davidson had a no-hitter going into the fifth, broken up by a Klosterman single which resulted in the first run of the ball game when Paul Witt (Baylor) with two outs reached first on an error. Ohlendorf was on the mound for the A's and with 8 K's through 6 innings, it looked as if one hit and one run would be enough to seal the deal for Chatham. But, the Brewster Whitecaps were able to put together a late game rally once Ohlendorf departed. Then Whitecaps' relief pitcher Chris Noonan (Seton Hall) did a great job perserving the 2-1 lead for Brewster and setting up the closing situation for Jarrett Santos (UNC-Green.) who came in the 7th inning with 2 outs, 2 men on, and struck out Frazier to end the A's threat. Santos continued to be untouchable as he threw a perfect eighth and then closed out the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Key Players: Chatham -Klosterman (2 for 4, 2B, 1 RBI, SB) -Ohlendorf (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) Brewster -Manzella (1 for 4, RBI) -Bixler (1 for 3, BB, SB) -Santos (2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K)

Game Recap

This was one of those games where the opposing pitchers got the best of Chatham's hitters. The A's struckout 12 times and were only able to muster 3 hits for the game. Wareham's offense was provided throughout their entire lineup, with each Gatemen reaching base at least once. This defeat will drop the A's to a 2-3 record. Key Players: Chatham -Frazier (2 for 4, 2B) -Witt (1 for 3, SH) Wareham -LaRoche (2 for 2, 2B, R, RBI, BB) -Emanuele (1 for 4, 2B, R, SB, BB) -Shepard (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) -McCormick (4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K)

Game Recap

This game is under protest. A controversial play in the top of the 10th inning when Brewster had men on first and third with one out. The ball was hit deep onto the warning track, where Jeff Frazier was able to make a great catch and a strong throw to Matt Anderson at first to double up the runner from first, although before Anderson stepped on the bag, Brewster was able to cross the plate for the go-ahead run and make the score 4-3. The home plate umpire acknowledged the double play to end the inning, but announced the fourth run for Brewster counted. At this same time it seemed that the third base umpire thought otherwise and eventually the home plate umpire overruled and stuck with his first decision. This brought Head Coach John Schiffner out of the dugout in quite an uproar, as it should, where there was clearly two umpires not agreeing on what turned out to be the game-winning run. As of now Adam Yates will receive the loss his first of the season. James Avery started this game and came out after the 7th. In the bottom of the 10th the A's gave it a great effort getting two men on base, but failed to come out on top in the extra frame. Further details of this game will be here soon. As of now this game is under protest.

Game Recap

This was a re-scheduled game due to a rainout on July 9th. This game was played on Friday, July 25th, @ 1pm. Chatham jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The A's exploded for 12 hits, 2 were homeruns off the bat off Zack Dillon (1) and Bryan Pritz (4). Ryan Klosterman and Chris Getz also had multiple hit games and a combine of 3 runs scored. The A's started James Avery and got exactly what they knew he could do, Avery went 7 complete shut-out innings, only allowed one hit and struckout 8 batters. On this particular day, it was evident that Chatham came to play and wanted it more than Hyannis. It was good to see the A's ball players play with some extra intensity as the head into this very breif All-Star Break (one day off) with a 3-way tie for first. Chatham improves thier record to 19-15-1 as the head into the last full week of games with playoffs in mind.

Game Recap

A 13-Inning Thiller ends in Chatham's favor, by the Game-Winning hit delivered by the A's centerfielder Bryan Pritz scoring Jeff Frazier from third base. This game was certainly a crowd pleaser for the 2,000+ fans that showed up at Veteran's Field, who saw a well fought game by both teams. Tim Rice who started the game for the A's, gave his team a solid outing only allowing one run on just four hits, while striking out five in 6 1/3 innnings pitched. All the action came after the nine innings were completed. In the top of the 10th game tied 2-2, Cotuit was threating with two outs men on second and third, on a 3-2 count with runners on the move, the ball was ripped towards right on the ground heading through the 3-4 hole, when Paul Witt makes a big league play diving, fully laid out onto the outfield grass, gets to his knees and chucks it over to first baseman Matt Anderson for the third out of the inning perserving the 2-2 tie. Then Chatham delayed the celebration all the way into the home half of the 13th when after one out, Jeff Frazier strokes the ball towards right center and hustling right out of the box, and showed off the wheels turning a single into a pop-up slide double to start things off for Chatham in the 13th. Next up, Chris Getz, who hits the ball up the middle beats out the infield single and moves Frazier to third. Now, one out men on first and third, with Bryan Pritz at the plate, who waste no time at all and delivers the first pitch fastball to left field for a walk off RBI single. This was a big win for the A's and improves their record to 18-15-1, putting Chatham in second place all alone with 37 points, which only trails the East Division leaders Orleans and Brewster tied for first with 39 points. So, it looks like our Chatham A's are peaking at the right time as the head to Hyannis in less than 12 hours to take on the Mets in a 1:00pm start. This is a rain make-up orginally scheduled for Wednesday, July 9th. James Avery (3-3) will be taking the mound for Chatham. Notables on tonight's game: Zane Green (4 for 4 w/ a BB) Nick Tucci (second win versus Cotuit in just a four day span) Paul Witt (game saving defensive play) and Jeff Frazier (another multiple-hit game). Chatham is on a four game winning streak, hoping to make it 5 in a row at Hyannis. Well, for tonight's thiller it was best summed up by Mr. Paul Galop, "Now, that's Cape League Baseball."

Game Recap

The best game of the year, so far. Veterans' Field was the place to be on Wednesday July 29th. As the Chatham A's put on quite a show for their fans. Trailing 3-2 heading into the home half of the 10th inning, the A's put together a spectacular team effort. To make it more dramactic it was all with two outs, as they rallied back and come out victorious! It was when our All-Star shortstop Ryan Klosterman came through and delivered a two out solo shot over the leftfield fence sending Vets' Field and his teammates jumping out of their seats. Next batter Matt Anderson responds with a base knock, which keeps Chatham's hopes alive. Next batter, was another one of our All-Stars, number 24 Jeff Frazier. The Harwich Mariners go into a pitching change as the Chatham fans break into a loud ruckus. Frazier stepped in the box with the crowd wanting him to deliver and he responded in his natural cool, calm, & collective way by taking a nasty two strike slider, on a line into deep center. Anderson off on the crack at the bat, the only thing the Mariners centerfielder could do was to take a few sprint steps forward and play the laser hit off Frazier's bat off a hop, well it was more off a skip as, it skimmed underneath the drawn out glove and shot towards the centerfield fence which caused the A's fans and teammates to jump into complete hysteria as they all yelled and waved Anderson around the bases. There was no play at the plate, just the entire A's ball club jumping on Matt ANderson and then flying over to Jeff Frazier with an amazing amount of excitement. The A's WIN!!! What a ball game, what a finish! This improves their record to 21wins, 16 loses, and 1 tie. They now gear up to take on the 1st place Orleans Cardinals.

Game Recap

This game was called in the bottom of the 7th inning due to fog. It's better this way, because the A's can erase this one away, chalk it up, and head into their last four regular season games, with the intensity and fire to get into those playoffs. As of now the standings have Orleans, Brewster and Chatham in 1st, 2nd, & 3rd respectively. This last strecth will get very interesting and exciting because 3 out of those 4 games for Chatham(21-18-1) have Brewster twice and Orleans once. GO A's!!!
