EDS Game 3 Preview: Chatham at Yarmouth-Dennis
CHATHAM, Mass. — The A’s have two options on Thursday night: win or go home.
After a 1-0 loss to Yarmouth-Dennis in a potential series-clinching game on Wednesday, Chatham (1-1, East) faces the Red Sox (1-1, East) in a pivotal East Divisional Series Game 3 matchup at Red Wilson Field. A win would book the A’s a spot in the East Division Championship Series against Harwich. A loss eliminates them.
Here’s everything to know before Thursday’s Game 3 matchup begins at 4:00 p.m.
In Chatham‘s biggest game of the year, it’ll turn to one of its most familiar faces. Oliver Pudvar (UConn) will toe the rubber for the A’s. Pudvar led all Anglers with 29.1 innings pitched and 30 strikeouts in the regular season. The lefty’s 9.20 strikeouts per nine innings also ranks first of all qualified Chatham pitchers. He’s been with Chatham since opening day, and hopes to help keep the A’s season alive Thursday.
Rhett Vaughn (Florida State) is a very worthy adversary. The Y-D righty has made 11 appearances and two starts for the Red Sox this summer, and he’s pitched to a minuscule 0.81 ERA in 22.1 innings. He’s allowed 10 hits, walked five and struck out 27 in that span. He’s only given up two earned runs this year, so Chatham will need to change that in order to advance.
In a game with just one run, just about any major hit would’ve stolen the show on Wednesday. And Ryder Robinson (BYU) rose to the occasion for Yarmouth-Dennis, smoking a solo homer over the right field wall in the eighth inning. It added to a stellar summer for the switch-hitting Robinson, who finished the regular season hitting .343 with a .911 OPS in his 12 games with the Red Sox.
Brock Ketelsen (Stanford) took center stage with a stellar start on the mound Wednesday, but the two-way player is still one to watch in the field on Thursday. Ketelsen is hitting .215 with a .667 OPS as an outfielder for the Red Sox, which aren’t gaudy numbers, but his 21 walks and six doubles are also solid marks.
There wasn’t much to love about Chatham’s bats Wednesday, as the A’s totaled two hits. One of them came from Eddie Marshall (Florida), who’s been incredibly hot as of late. Marshall went 3-for-5 in Game 1 of the series with an RBI double and a run scored, and he’s 4-for-8 overall since the playoffs began.
Bino Watters (LSU) has been Chatham’s best offensive player throughout the entire season, a fact cemented by his selection for Chatham’s Thurman Munson Most Outstanding Position Player Award. That hasn’t been much different in the playoffs. Watters is hitting 4-for-7 in postseason play, and went 3-for-4 in Chatham’s Game 1 win at Red Wilson Field.
In three games at Red Wilson Field this summer, the Anglers are undefeated, with two wins and a tie.
Chatham’s first trip to Y-D, back on June 30, ended in a 6-6 tie. The A’s led by four at multiple points in the game, but ultimately blew a late lead. They made up for it in their next trip to Red Wilson Field, when they won 4-1 on the final day of the regular season. Then, in Game 1 of the EDS, Chatham’s bats exploded for nine runs and three homers in a 9-5 victory on the road.
Red Wilson is certainly a hitter-friendly park, as the deepest part goes only about 370 feet. That might be just what the doctor ordered for Chatham after the bats struggled Wednesday night.
