Game 40 Preview: Chatham at Yarmouth-Dennis
CHATHAM, Mass. — And then there was one.
Having played four games in the past three days, the Anglers have just one more regular season contest left. It’s at Red Wilson Field against Yarmouth-Dennis, who the Anglers could face Tuesday in the first round of the Cape Cod Baseball League playoffs.
There’s little to play for at this point, since Chatham has clinched a playoff spot and Y-D has secured the No. 1 seed. But the A’s are just one point behind Harwich for third place in the East Division, and there’s still a seven-inning game on the schedule between these two squads before they move on to the playoffs.
Here’s everything to know before Chatham (18-18-3, East) closes its regular season against Yarmouth-Dennis (28-10-1, East) Sunday afternoon.
Jay Powell, the A’s acting manager, doesn’t have many options here. After Chatham’s win over Harwich Saturday, he said that he has three pitchers to cover the A’s doubleheader Sunday. Austin Shirley (UT Arlington) is one of them, and he’ll start for Chatham against Y-D. He hasn’t appeared in a game for Chatham yet. This past spring, Shirley pitched as a reliever at Tyler Junior College (Texas), and he wielded a fastball that touches 94 miles per hour.
Peyton Robidoux (Washington) is starting for Yarmouth-Dennis. He has appeared in one game for the Red Sox, allowing two runs in 2.2 innings of work. He gave up two hits and one walk in his outing, and will have the chance to lower his 6.75 earned run average Sunday as he makes his first start of the CCBL season.
Tommy Goodin (Vanderbilt) has been Y-D’s best hitter all summer, and he has the .881 OPS to prove it. He has the best batting average (.313), on-base percentage (.373) and slugging percentage (.508) of all qualified Red Sox batters, too. Goodin has driven in 31 runs, a mark that leads the CCBL by four, and his five homers on the year also lead Y-D by two.
Mateo Serna (Alabama), a fellow SEC hitter, has been similarly strong at the plate for Yarmouth-Dennis this summer. He hasn’t played enough to be a qualified batter, having just 70 at bats to Goodin’s 128, but his numbers aren’t too far off from Goodin’s. His .300 average is a hair behind Goodin’s .313 mark, and his .888 OPS is a hair above Goodin’s .881 mark.
Anglers fans have one last chance to watch Ty Peeples (Florida State) in action. After Chatham’s 7-2 win over Harwich Saturday, Powell said Peeples will be departing the Cape on Monday to report to Florida State. The utilityman has been one of the Anglers’ best hitters as of late, racking up a .745 OPS and hitting his second homer of the summer in that win over the Mariners. Now, he’ll finish his summer Sunday against Y-D.
Aidan Eshelman (UTSA) hasn’t been in Chatham for very long, but he’s already made an impact. He has scored three runs and driven in two more in his first three games thus far, and he just had a two-hit performance against Harwich Saturday. Albeit in an incredibly small sample size, he now has a .429 average and a 1.071 OPS.
Chatham’s pitching staff — between the now-departed Jack Gleason (Mississippi State) and Brady Coe (Houston) — combined to allow just one hit across seven innings of work in the A’s 2-0 win over Cotuit earlier this morning. The Anglers only have two pitchers left to throw against Y-D, but if those trends persist, Sunday could be a banner day for Chatham’s pitching staff.
When these squads faced off on July 24, Chatham broke out of its stupor in a big way. The Anglers entered the matchup on a four-game losing streak, and exited it with a triumphant 9-1 victory over the Red Sox.
