Game 30 Resumption Preview: Chatham at Cotuit
CHATHAM, Mass. — Over the past week, the Anglers have been one of the hottest teams in the Cape Cod Baseball League. But on Thursday, they’ll turn back the clock to a time when they weren’t so hot, when they resume their July 21 contest against Cotuit in the third inning.
The game was previously postponed due to lightning at Cotuit’s Lowell Park. Chatham will start the contest with a 1-0 lead, courtesy of Harlin Hovater’s (Mississippi State) third-inning home run. And since it’s been delayed twice, it’ll be a seven-inning contest in total, which means four innings of baseball are actually slated to be played at Lowell Park Sunday morning.
Here’s everything to know about Chatham (17-18-3, East) and the Kettleers (12-24-2, West) before they resume the July 21 contest.
Chatham initially started Jack Gleason (Mississippi State) on July 21, but he’s now left the Cape, and Brady Coe (Houston) will pick up where Gleason left off. It’ll be Coe’s first start of the summer after previously making two relief appearances. Coe has pitched to a 4.50 earned run average in four innings. He’s also struck out four batters and issued two walks in that span.
Cotuit will resume this game with Mason Holloway (Binghamton) on the bump. Holloway has not started a game yet, but he’s made three relief appearances for Cotuit and tossed 9.2 innings. The control has been an issue, as he’s walked seven and struck out just two. But he’s allowed just 6.5 hits per nine innings in his time with the Kettleers, and he hasn’t allowed a homer yet.
There hasn’t been a ton to love about the Kettleers’ offense as of late, which ranks ninth in the league in OPS at a .657 mark. But Landon Beaver (UAB) has been a bright spot recently, hitting .286 with a .836 OPS — a team-high for all active Kettleers. He’s also totaled four home runs and 18 RBIs over his 30 games for Cotuit.
Hogan Denny (Indiana) started the season with the Kettleers, but missed most of July as he played for Team USA. But now, Denny is back in Cotuit, and he’s been one of the Kettleers’ best bats. He’s hitting .214 with a .672 OPS in his 15 total games for Cotuit, knocking seven doubles and totaling eight RBIs.
On Chatham’s end, there’s been plenty to like offensively. The A’s have put up a combined 31 runs over their past five games. Jamie Palmese (Kansas) has been a big part of that, as the A’s new leadoff man has hit .316 with an .803 OPS over his past five games. He’s also scored three runs and driven in four in that span.
The only Angler with a better OPS mark in that span is Armani Guzman (West Virginia), who’s been on an absolute tear. Guzman is hitting .474 with a 1.071 OPS and five RBIs over his past five games. He’s also stolen a whopping nine bases in those games, and now ranks third in the CCBL with 18 stolen bases in just 18 games.
Cotuit ranks second-to-last in the CCBL with a 4.96 team earned run average. Only Falmouth (5.34) has a worse number. The Kettleers also rank second-to-last in the league with 204 runs allowed, and have allowed 6.6 runs per game over their past five games.
Chatham hasn’t been too much better, pitching to a 4.14 ERA. But the A’s pitchers have turned a corner over the past five games, allowing just 2.14 runs per game in that span. They’ll look to keep that going in Thursday’s game, which they enter with a 1-0 advantage already.
In Chatham’s last full game against Cotuit on July 1, the A’s beat the Kettleers 8-5 on a bizarre night at Veterans Field. Nolan Traeger (Arkansas) knocked two home runs — one of which directly preceded a power outage which caused the game to be delayed.
