Game 37 Preview: Chatham at Brewster
CHATHAM, Mass. — The stakes are clear. If Chatham wins, or Orleans loses, the Anglers seal a spot in the Cape Cod Baseball League playoffs.
The A’s haven’t been this hot in a while. Right now, they are on their first four-game win streak since June, and they’ve scored at least four runs in all four of those victories. That was before two consecutive rain-cancellations forced the A’s out of action.
Now, Chatham treks to Brewster’s Stony Brook Field Tuesday, with a chance to simultaneously extend that win streak to five and clinch its postseason spot. Here’s everything to know before Chatham (15-17-3, East) faces Brewster (24-9-3, East) in a seven-inning game Thursday.
For the Anglers, Wyatt Nadeau (Vanderbilt) is set to pick up his first start of the summer. He’s made seven appearances, all out of the bullpen, and had mixed results in those outings thus far. His 11.81 strikeouts per nine innings showcase his swing-and-miss potential, and he’s only walked four in 10.2 innings this summer. But his 5.91 earned run average and .293 batting average against showcases a tendency to get hit a bit.
Gaines Estridge (Air Force), on the other hand, has only had positives to speak of on the mound. Brewster’s starter has made three appearances and two starts, pitching to a 1.50 earned run average and a 0.67 WHIP in that span. He’s only walked two batters in 12 innings, and his .150 batting average against is similarly sterling. If these trends continue, Chatham might have a tough time putting runs across the board.
Brewster Players To Watch
Jacob Lee (VCU) currently leads Brewster with six homers and 21 runs batted in, and his .908 OPS ranks fifth in the CCBL. He’s been the Whitecaps’ hottest hitter all season, and he seems to be getting even hotter at just the right time as well. Over his past four games, Lee has notched five walks, homered once and registered a 1.393 OPS.
Outside of Lee, though, Dane Harvey (Ohio State) might be the Whitecaps’ strongest slugger at the plate. He ranks second on the team in homers (four) and RBIs (17), and his .458 slugging percentage would rank second among qualified Whitecaps if he had enough plate appearances to qualify. He’s also heating up as of late, too, having notched six hits, one homer and registering a 1.253 OPS in his past five games.
There aren’t many players on the Cape hitting better than Bino Watters (LSU) right now. Right now, he’s tied for fourth in the CCBL with a .331 batting average, and his .403 on-base percentage ranks sixth. He was out of commission with a sore back Sunday against Harwich, but returned to action Tuesday with an RBI single in Chatham’s 5-3 win over Wareham.
Eddie Marshall (Florida) returned to Veterans Field with a bang Tuesday, smacking a two-run homer into left field to seal Chatham’s 5-3 victory over Wareham. It was his second long ball of the summer, and boosted his OPS to .729. He’s only had two hits in his past five games, and both of them were homers, but that power stroke could help Chatham to a win against Brewster.
There are two baseball teams in the CCBL with an OPS over .700, and they’re both hanging on to that distinction by a thread.
Yarmouth-Dennis leads the league with its .701 OPS. Exactly one percentage point behind is Brewster, sporting a .700 OPS as a team. Chatham is still a distant seventh with its .664 OPS, but the A’s .358 on-base percentage still leads the Whitecaps by four percentage points.
The last time these two teams faced off on July 17, they only got through seven innings before darkness shortened the contest. Chatham led 4-1 throughout the game, but Brewster stormed back with a three-run sixth inning to knot the game up at 4-4. The game-tying run came on a groundout from Jay Abernathy (Oklahoma), who was injured by Harlin Hovater’s (Mississippi State) throw to first.
