Game 36 Preview: Chatham vs. Wareham
CHATHAM, Mass. — The Anglers couldn’t have entered Monday’s off-day on a better note. After dropping three straight games entering Friday, the A’s strung together three consecutive wins by a combined score of 25-8, inching them closer to clinching a playoff spot.
Now, they look to continue the momentum at home against Wareham, another squad fighting for playoff position. Here’s what to know about the Gatemen (11-23, West) and the Anglers (14-17-3, East) before Tuesday’s matchup.
Oliver Pudvar (UConn) is set to make his team-leading sixth start of the summer at home Tuesday. The lefty has been both a starter and a reliever for the A’s this year, making seven appearances thus far, although he’s leaned into the reliever role more as of late. He leads the team with 24.1 innings pitched, amassing a 5.18 earned run average and 23 strikeouts. Expect him to go a couple of innings for the A’s, although it could be a shorter start than he’s used to.
Brady Montrowl (Central Florida) will get the ball for Wareham, who’s had an almost completely opposite Cape experience than Pudvar. While the Chatham starter has been here since opening day, Montrowl has made just one appearance on the Cape — in a loss to Brewster on July 22 — where he pitched just one inning. It was a good inning, though, as he didn’t allow a run and struck out two. The Gatemen will look to stretch him a few innings against the A’s.
Wareham has just one player with a top-20 OPS in the Cape League, and it’s RJ Hamilton (Duke). The outfielder is hitting .278 with a .738 OPS, which slots him right at number 20 of qualified batters in the CCBL. He doesn’t have a ton of pop, as just two of his 25 hits have gone for extra bases. But he’s a consistent threat on the bases, swiping 12 bags.
Connor Cuff (Louisiana-Lafayette) has been another bright spot as of late. In 14 games for the Gatemen, he’s hitting .309 with a .774 OPS. He’s prone to striking out — with 10 K’s to four walks — which could be an issue against Pudvar, but he’s also totaled 17 hits thus far. His three doubles and one home run indicate he has the power to alter a game.
Aside from Bino Watters (LSU), who missed the A’s last game with back soreness, there isn’t a hotter bat in Chatham’s lineup than Armani Guzman (West Virginia) right now. Over the past five games, he’s hitting .368 with a 1.057 OPS and a whopping eight RBIs. Of his seven hits in that span, three have gone for extra bases, including his go-ahead three-run double in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Harwich.
Cam Pruitt (Missouri) has quietly been one of the A’s best bats over the past week as well, totaling four hits and four walks over his past five games. He knocked a clutch one-out single in the bottom of the ninth Sunday, and came around to score the game-winning run. He hasn’t had the best season thus far, hitting just .167 with a .462 OPS, but he seems to be heating up at the right time.
Chatham is on a three-game win streak for the third time this season, and its first such streak since late June. The Anglers’ longest win streak of the season was four games back in the second week of June, and they can match that mark with a win Tuesday.
