Game 30 Preview: Chatham at Cotuit
CHATHAM, Mass. — The Anglers’ return from the All-Star break came with some missed opportunities. The A’s trailed 6-2 early against Hyannis, trimmed the lead to two late, but stranded the bases loaded in both the eighth and the ninth.
It led to a 7-5 loss at Veterans Field, where Chatham stranded 10 runners on base. But another opportunity awaits on Tuesday, when the Anglers travel to Cotuit’s Lowell Park for the first time since opening week.
Here’s everything to know about Chatham (11-15-3, East) and the Kettleers (10-17-2, West), who are 1-4 over the past week.
Probable Starters
Of the Chatham relievers who’ve made the transition to starters this summer, Jack Gleason (Mississippi State) may have been the best so far. Despite being a reliever for the Bulldogs this past spring, Gleason is slated to get his fourth start of the campaign for Chatham Tuesday. He’s amassed a 1.76 earned run average and struck out 11 over 15.1 innings of work.
Tyler Brashear (Eckerd) is in a similar boat to Gleason, spending most of his summer as a reliever. He’s made one start so far, but will get his second Tuesday. In seven total appearances, Brashear has amassed a 4.91 ERA and allowed 16 hits. But he’s also totaled 22 strikeouts in 14.2 innings, good for a 13.9 K/9 mark.
Cotuit Players To Watch
There hasn’t been a ton to love about the Kettleers offense as of late, which ranks ninth in the league at a .626 mark. But Dawson Park (LSU) has been a bright spot. The Baton Rouge-bound infielder leads all qualified Kettleers with a .758 OPS and a .258 batting average.
Jake Hanley (Georgia), who played for Chatham last summer, continues to be a power threat for Cotuit, too. The 6-foot-6 Hanley leads the team with three homers, one of which came against the A’s in his return to Veterans Field July 1. He’s hitting just .179 with a .607 OPS on the campaign, but may cause the A’s some trouble when they square off again.
Chatham Players To Watch
Jack Bell (Texas A&M) had the best game of his young Chatham career Monday, knocking two hits and driving in his first two runs as an Angler. The shortstop, who’s appeared in just two games for the A’s thus far, hit .303 with a .452 on-base percentage at TCU this past spring. He’s 2-for-8 as an Angler thus far.
Ty Peeples (Florida State) was also a bright spot for the A’s Monday, reaching base four times on two hits. Peeples singled in the second inning and tripled in the sixth. He also walked twice, coming around to score two of Chatham’s five runs. He’s now hitting .250 with a .845 OPS.
Number To Know: .334
Cotuit ranks third-to-last in the CCBL with a .334 on-base percentage. They’ve totaled just 6.9 hits per game, and mustered just 29 hits over the past five games.
Chatham hasn’t been much better. The A’s are still last in the CCBL with a .217 average, but they lead the league 157 total walks. So, Tuesday’s matchup could be a pitcher’s duel. It’ll likely be decided by who can get on base more consistently.

When Chatham last played Cotuit on July 1, the A’s beat the Kettleers 8-5 on a bizarre night at Veterans Field. Nolan Traeger (Arkansas) knocked two home runs — one of which directly preceded a power outage which caused the game to be delayed.
There was no power outage for Chatham’s bats that night, though. The Anglers slugged three home runs, a single-game season-high. Two of them came from Traeger, who finished the day with five RBIs. The other came from Harlin Hovater (Mississippi State), a two-run shot that gave the A’s some insurance in the seventh inning.
