CHATHAM, Mass. — On the eve of the Cape League All-Star Game, Chatham has another chance to get back on track before a two-day break.
The A’s finally got the win to snap a season-worst five-game losing streak, beating Bourne 4-3 on Thursday. Junior Lauaki (Georgia) blasted a walk-off solo homer in the ninth, capping off what had been a difficult week for Chatham.
Now, the Anglers can build on that momentum before the All-Star break, taking on division rival Brewster on the road. Here’s everything to know about Chatham (11-14-2, East) and the Whitecaps (18-7-2, East) before Friday’s matchup.
Probable Starters
Christian Chatterton (Auburn) is set to make his second start of the year for Chatham. Since arriving in early July, he’s made two polar opposite appearances. One was a lights-out showing against Orleans on July 4, when he tossed three hitless innings and recorded the win. The other was a two-inning start against Brewster July 10, when he gave up four earned runs in two innings. Chatham hopes he can replicate the former on Friday.
Schuyler Sandford (Florida) will get the start for Brewster. The righty hasn’t made a start this season, but has been a rock for the Whitecap bullpen. He’s made seven relief appearances, pitching to a 2.13 ERA in 12.2 innings. His biggest weakness had been his tendency to walk batters, giving up 14 free passes while striking out nine.
Brewster Players To Watch
Jacob Lee (VCU) remains one of the top power bats in the Cape, and he’s shown that plenty against the Anglers this summer. He’s knocked two dingers against Chatham, the most recent of which was a two-run shot on July 10, which proved to be the difference in Brewster’s 7-5 win. Lee leads the Whitecaps with five homers and 16 RBIs, and is second on the team with an .843 OPS.
The player who ranks first in that category, though, is Jamie Laskofski (North Carolina), with an .878 mark. The infielder is tied for first in the CCBL with 21 runs scored, ranks second in the CCBL with a .326 batting average, and ranks third in the league with 29 hits. He’ll look to stay hot before he takes the field in the All-Star Game Saturday.
Chatham Players To Watch
Lauaki is the hottest bat in Chatham’s lineup right now. He’s now knocked a home run in three of his last four games, with Thursday’s walk-off blast being the latest installment. He has swung the bat well even when he’s not pushing it over the fence, totaling eight hits in his first eight games as an Angler.
Tyler Howe (North Carolina) has also enjoyed a hot start to his time in Chatham, picking up two hits, two walks and two RBIs through his first eight at-bats. He kept it up with a single and a walk Thursday against Bourne, bringing his on-base streak to three games. Howe was an everyday starter for a UNC squad that made the College World Series Finals, and he has looked the part early into his stint in Chatham.
Number To Know: 6
It’s been a tale of two very different streaks since Brewster and Chatham last met on July 10. The Whitecaps are on a six-game unbeaten streak over the past week, with five wins and one tie. The Anglers had lost five straight before escaping with the win Thursday.
On July 10, just five points separated Brewster and Chatham in the CCBL East Division standings. Now, that number is up to 14 as the Whitecaps have firmly grasped second place in the division. Chatham still sits fourth, although it’s eight points clear of fifth-place Orleans for the final playoff spot.
So, Friday’s matchup is a battle of teams on very different trajectories. But the A’s hope it can act as a momentum swing after the All-Star break.
Last Time They Played
The Anglers fell to Brewster 7-5 in the aforementioned July 10 matchup. The Whitecaps pounced for four runs in the second inning, then two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
The Chatham bats woke up to the tune of five runs in the bottom of the eighth, buoyed by three RBI singles and two sacrifice flies. It gave the A’s a chance to win the game late, but they ultimately couldn’t find a way to put a few more runs across in the ninth.
That loss kicked off Chatham’s losing streak. On Friday, the Anglers hope to keep rebounding from it.
