Game 24 Preview: Chatham vs. Orleans
CHATHAM, Mass. — It’s not often you can be no-hit through nine innings and still have a chance to win. But that’s what happened to Chatham Saturday night.

The A’s couldn’t muster a hit through nine against Harwich at Whitehouse Field, but still led 1-0 entering the bottom of the frame. The Mariners eventually woke up offensively, enough to walk Chatham off in the 10th inning and send the Anglers their third loss in their past four games.

Chatham doesn’t have to wait long to get back on track, though. The Anglers (10-11-2, East) host division foe Orleans (7-16, East) Sunday at Veterans Field, looking to get their bats rolling once again.

Here’s what to know about the matchup.

Probable Starters

Recently-named CCBL All-Star Max Luzarraga (Dallas Baptist) will toe the rubber for Chatham Sunday in his second start of the season. Luzarraga’s primarily been a bullpen arm for the A’s, making four relief appearances, but he’s backed up his All-Star selection. He hasn’t allowed an earned run through 10.2 innings, mustering a 0.94 WHIP and .139 opponent batting average. In his first start, July 5 against Harwich, he went four innings.

Andrew Cutler (George Washington) is set to get the start for Orleans Sunday. Cutler’s also primarily been a reliever for the Firebirds, but will make his second start when they take on the Anglers. He’s tossed 13.2 innings across six appearances, allowing seven earned runs for a 4.61 earned run average. Orleans will also hope to stretch him for a few innings on Sunday.

Orleans Players To Watch

Chatham still could have some nightmares about what Dominic Cadiz (UCLA) did to the A’s on July 3. Cadiz went 6-for-6 — including a walkoff single in the ninth inning — to give the Firebirds a 10-9 win. That performance contributed to his .310 batting average, league-leading 28 hits and .772 OPS. He’ll represent the East All-Stars alongside Luzarraga and three other Chatham players next weekend.

Tyler Myatt (Tennessee), wasn’t so hot against Chatham, but he’s still been one of the best hitters in the league. Myatt’s hitting .301, and his .898 OPS ranks fourth in the CCBL. While he leads the league with 29 strikeouts, he also ranks second in the league with 25 hits. He’ll look to keep rolling against the A’s on Sunday.

Chatham Players To Watch

There wasn’t much to love about Chatham’s offense on Saturday, but one silver lining was Rob Rispoli (UConn). The infielder already led the league in walks entering the contest, and walked three more times against Harwich. He also tallied the A’s only hit of the day on an infield single in the 10th inning. He’s been a crucial spark plug for Chatham this season, and he’ll need to play that role again Sunday.

Bino Watters (LSU) lost his 11-game hit streak when he went hitless against Harwich on Sunday, but he’s still been Chatham’s most reliable bat. Since late June, Watters is hitting .383 with 18 hits and 15 RBIs — marks that all lead the CCBL in that span. Look for him to get back on track at home Sunday.

Number To Know: 17

In Saturday’s loss to Harwich, Chatham batters struck out 17 times and mustered just one hit. Seven of Chatham’s nine starters struck out multiple times. Six of the A’s Ks were looking, while they couldn’t seem to time up Harwich pitchers all night long.

Strikeouts haven’t often been an issue for Chatham’s offense, really. The Anglers are middle of the pack in the CCBL with 209 total strikeouts. But in order to pick up a win Sunday — against an Orleans pitching staff that leads the Cape League with 225 strikeouts — the A’s will need to battle at the plate.

Last Time They Played

When Chatham last hosted the Firebirds on July 4, the Anglers came away with a 8-4 win. The A’s pounced for four runs in the second inning and never squandered that advantage, beating Orleans for the first time this season.

Ironically, it was the Firebirds who pounced first in the ballgame, tacking on an early run off Chatham starter Angel Cervantes (UCLA) — the first run the right-hander had allowed all season. But his offense backed him up in the bottom half of the frame, putting four runs across, highlighted by a two-run single from Armani Guzman (West Virginia). The A’s then added two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning.

The Anglers didn’t allow another run until the ninth, when they conceded three. But the seven-run cushion was more than enough.
