CHATHAM, Mass. — The Anglers returned to Veterans Field with a welcoming sight on Thursday. Chatham came away with its first victory in five days, defeating Wareham 4-2.
The win snapped the A’s first multi-game losing streak since mid June. Now, Chatham looks to make it a winning streak.
The Anglers return home to face Brewster, the second-place team in the East Division, at Veterans Field Friday. Here’s everything to know about the Whitecaps (13-7-1, East) before they take on the A’s (10-9-2, East).
Probable Starters
Christian Chatterton (Auburn) will get the ball for Chatham. Chatterton arrived on the Cape a little over a week ago, and has made just one appearance for the A’s thus far, but he made his mark in his Chatham debut. Chatterton tossed three scoreless innings against Orleans on July 4, striking out three and allowing one baserunner. The A’s have to improvise after several starters have departed, and they hope Chatterton can provide some stability on Friday.
On the other side, Tate DeRias (Baylor) will make his first start of the year for the Whitecaps as well. DeRias has made two appearances for Brewster this season, both of which came out of the bullpen. He’s pitched just 6.1 innings across those two outings, allowing six hits but just one earned run, good for a 1.42 earned run average. It’s certainly an improvement from the 12.15 ERA he had at Miami this past spring, where he allowed 27 runs in 20 innings.
Brewster Players To Watch
Jacob Lee (VCU) has been one of Brewster’s most consistent bats throughout the Cape season, and boasts a top-5 OPS in the league at .870. He’s also tied for the league lead with four home runs and ranks second on the team with 10 RBIs. One of his homers came at Veterans Field when Brewster last visited, and he’ll look to ride that momentum into Friday.
More recently, Holden Pantier (Georgia Tech) has been the name to watch in the Brewster order. The infielder is seven for his last 17 with a 1.133 OPS over the past week. He’s totaled three doubles with four RBIs in that span as well. Look for him to get going again on Friday.
Chatham Players To Watch
Bino Watters (LSU) has probably been the biggest headliner in Chatham’s lineup for the month of July, and he keeps on proving his value to the Angler order. After another three-hit performance on Thursday, he’s now on a 10-game hit streak dating back to June 26. He’s hitting .471 with a 1.053 OPS in the past week alone.
Ty Peeples (Florida State) didn’t find himself in the No. 4 hole — let alone in the lineup at all — often at Georgia this past spring. But he’s occupied that role in the Chatham batting order in most of his Cape League games thus far. Peeples did so again on Thursday against Wareham, and his first-inning RBI proved to be crucial in the narrow victory. Whether he’s deputized in the cleanup spot or not, look for him to keep rolling on Friday.
Number To Know: 10
Brewster pitchers have only allowed 10 runs over its past five games. The 2.00 average is by far the best in the CCBL over the past seven days, and the Whitecaps’ 32 hits allowed also ranks second-best of all Cape teams in that span.
Chatham, meanwhile, has allowed 28 runs over its past five contests, and its 50 hits allowed in that span are tied for most in the league.
So, offense may not be easy to come by for the A’s Friday. It’ll need another strong performance from the bullpen to stay on top against Brewster.
Last Time They Played
The Anglers would probably like to forget the last time they faced Brewster, when they fell 9-8 at Stony Brook Field on June 29.
Chatham led 8-1 entering the seventh, but an utter collapse from the A’s bullpen saw eight Brewster runs cross the plate in the final three innings. Four of those came with no outs in the ninth, and a Dane Harvey (Ohio State) walkoff single closed out a disastrous night.
The A’s offense played well, scoring a six-spot in the second inning to go up 7-1 early. Rob Rispoli (UConn), Bino Watters (LSU) and Cole Johnson (Georgia) all tallied multiple RBIs for Chatham, but their efforts proved futile in a game the Anglers let slip late. They’ll look for some revenge back at home Friday.
