Game 17 Preview: Chatham at Orleans
CHATHAM, Mass. — And then there was one.

Chatham has played every single team in the Cape Cod Baseball League, with one notable exception. That would be Orleans. Now, the A’s get to scratch every team off their list when they travel to Eldredge Park to take on the Firebirds Friday for the first time all season.

This is a battle between the fourth and fifth placed teams in the East Division, and the only two teams in the division that haven’t yet crossed the 20-point threshold.

Here’s everything to know before Chatham (8-6-2, East) faces Orleans (5-11, East).

Probable Starters

Gavin Guidry (LSU) is getting the ball for Chatham, but it’s going to be hard for him to outdo his last performance. The last time Guidry was on the bump, he struck out 11 batters — a season-high for any Chatham pitcher — in the A’s 4-2 win over Hyannis on June 27. With that performance, he now has a team-leading 19 punchouts in his three starts, though his 4.80 earned run average shows he can be hit-or-miss.

Another righty, Jacob Haley (South Carolina), will oppose him. He’s gotten off to a similarly strong start for Orleans this summer, allowing zero runs and striking out 10 across his 8.2 innings of work for the Firebirds. Despite serving primarily as a reliever for South Alabama this past season, Haley has been serving in a versatile role for the Firebirds this summer, and currently ranks fifth on the team in innings pitched.

Orleans Players To Watch

Fans of the Cape League might recognize Tyler Myatt (Tennessee). After all, he was with Orleans last summer, as well. Myatt crushed four long balls in just 10 games with the Firebirds in 2025, hit for a .302 batting average and registered a 1.022 OPS. His performance was strong enough to earn him a return offer after a lackluster 2026 campaign with the Volunteers, and thus far, he’s taken advantage of it with three homers and a team-leading .953 OPS for Orleans.

He doesn’t have the past pedigree of Myatt, but there’s few hitters on the Cape with more raw potential than Firebirds outfielder Bub Terrell (Auburn). Coming off of a sophomore season where he was a fixture in Auburn’s outfield, crushing 16 homers with a .919 OPS, Terrell has gotten off to a hot start to his time with the Firebirds. Other than Myatt, he is the only Firebird with multiple home runs this summer, and his .821 OPS is a solid mark as well.

Chatham Players To Watch

How could you not have your eyes on Nolan Traeger (Arkansas)? After Chatham’s last game, A’s fans will surely have their focus affixed to their backstop, eagerly awaiting an encore. He entered Wednesday with a batting average below .150 and an OPS below .400, and exited it with two home runs — one that preceded a power outage at Veterans Field — and an OPS that now sits at a much more respectable .625. Who knows how he’ll follow that up?

There were actually three home runs hit on Wednesday, though Traeger’s two surely stole the show. Harlin Hovater (Mississippi State) capped off his evening by blasting his first long ball of the season, giving the A’s the cushion they needed to defeat Cotuit. Entering Wednesday with just one extra-base hit in 15 games, he hadn’t displayed his power much before the blast, but perhaps that was just what Chatham’s first baseman needed to get himself going.

Number To Know: 65

Dennis Cook has said it all season: He just wants to see his pitchers throw strikes. If they do that and attack the zone, they’ll give themselves a puncher’s chance to get anyone out.

So far, the Anglers have heeded their manager’s advice. Through 16 games of play, Chatham has walked just 65 batters — the second-lowest mark of any team in the CCBL. They have also only plunked 10 batters, which is the lowest mark of any team on the Cape, too. Thus far, command has been nothing if not a strength for the A’s.

Last Time They Played

As previously mentioned, Orleans is the lone team that Chatham is yet to play in 2026, so one has to go back all the way to Aug. 1, 2025, to find the last time that these East Division rivals have squared off. The A’s were out of playoff contention by that point, and lost a 2-1 low-scoring contest to the Firebirds.

Kaden Smith (South Florida) impressed on the bump, throwing 5.2 innings of two-run baseball for Chatham, but the Anglers’ offense couldn’t support him. The A’s went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and put up just six hits in a silent offensive performance.
