CHATHAM, Mass. — After three straight wins, the Anglers have run into some trouble in their final few contests.
Chatham was walked off in its 9-8 loss to Brewster Monday, and then was dealt a 6-6 darkness-shortened tie with Yarmouth-Dennis Tuesday night. In both games, the A’s led by five or more runs but blew the lead in the final few innings. Now, they look to rebound as they return to Veterans Field for the first time in three days.
Here’s everything to know about Chatham’s (7-6-2, East) matchup with Cotuit (5-8-2, West).
Probable Starters
The reigning CCBL Pitcher of the Week, Oliver Pudvar (UConn), will make his third start of the campaign Wednesday. Pudvar enters the matchup 1-1 with a 3.38 earned run average through 10.2 innings of work. He most recently tossed five scoreless innings for Chatham in a 9-1 win over Hyannis on June 21, then pitched 1.2 spotless innings in relief during the A’s 6-3 win over Harwich on June 26. He’s enjoyed a stellar start to his first year on the Cape.
Tristan Hunter (Kentucky) is set to get the start for Cotuit, which will be his third of the campaign as well. Hunter sports a 3.00 ERA, having allowed three earned runs in nine innings of work across two starts and a relief appearance. He’s walked just two batters and struck out eight. At Kentucky, Hunter was primarily a reliever, and sported a 6.88 ERA out of the bullpen.
Cotuit Players To Watch
Since these two teams last faced off, Cotuit lost a lot of the big names in its lineup, like Tague Davis (Louisville) and Hogan Denny (Indiana). But it retained a few big bats that should play a major role Wednesday.
Jake Hanley (Georgia) — who spent 35 games with Chatham last summer — is still around, and just committed to the Bulldogs out of the transfer portal on Monday. He leads Cotuit with two home runs and a .759 OPS, and is tied for the team lead with five RBIs.
Dawson Park (LSU) is another one of the major pieces in the Kettleer lineup, as the former Texas State infielder is bound for Baton Rouge. He’s hitting .308 with a .894 OPS and four RBIs through nine games with Cotuit.
Chatham Players To Watch
Bino Watters (LSU) has been on a tear for Chatham lately, and that continued Tuesday against Y-D. Watters tallied three RBIs at Red Wilson Field, bringing his total to six in his past three games. He hit his first home run of the year Sunday, then tallied two RBIs and two hits on Monday. He’ll try to stay hot when the A’s return to Veterans Field Wednesday.
Nolan Traeger (Arkansas) has been Chatham’s pick behind the plate in each of its last three contests. There’s no telling if A’s manager Dennis Cook will stick with him again Wednesday, but if he does, he’s certainly one to watch. Traeger tallied two RBIs in Tuesday’s win, and he’s been a more consistent bat since moving to the cleanup spot.
Number To Know: 10
Ten represents the amount of second-inning runs that Chatham has scored over their past two games. The Anglers scored six in the frame against Brewster, and four in the frame against Y-D.
Those early runs were what Chatham lacked in its early losses. The bats have undoubtedly woken up recently, and they’re pouncing early, but the A’s bullpen hasn’t done the offense any favors. Anglers’ relievers have allowed 13 runs over the past two games, directly leading to missed opportunities for wins. The A’s must find a balance to pick up results going forward.
Last Time They Played
The Anglers’ last meeting with Cotuit was far and away their best performance of the season. Chatham destroyed the Kettleers 17-2 on June 18, mercy-ruling them after seven innings.
The runs primarily came in the middle innings, as the A’s put up a six-spot in the fourth inning, a three-spot in the fifth and five more runs in the sixth. Gabe Fraser (Florida State/Transfer) had a monster day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored and six RBIs. All but one of Chatham’s starters recorded a hit, and seven tallied at least one RBI.
It would’ve been tough to lose any game in which your offense puts up 17 runs, but Jack Ohman (Yale) made sure Cotuit stood no chance in his first Chatham start. Ohman tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three to put a stamp on an utterly dominant day on both sides for the A’s.
