Game 15 Preview: Chatham at Yarmouth-Dennis
CHATHAM, Mass. — The Anglers’ win streak came to a cruel end at Stony Brook Field, thanks to the efforts of the Brewster Whitecaps. Chatham blew a seven-run lead, giving up four runs in the bottom of the ninth, to snap its three-game win streak.

It doesn’t get easier for the A’s. The third game of their three-game away stretch brings them to South Yarmouth, where the Red Sox have gotten off to a red-hot start. Their .923 winning percentage soars above the Cape, as do their 24 points, with no one else even approaching 20 yet.

Now, it’s Chatham’s (7-6-1, East) turn to take the trek to Red Wilson Field to face the Red Sox (13-1-0, East), and perhaps add another loss to their nearly-unblemished record. Here’s everything to know ahead of the road matchup Tuesday.

Probable Starters

Success for the A’s begins on the mound, so it’s a good sign that Jack Ohman (Yale) is taking the bump for them this time around. Outside of Angel Cervantes (UCLA), the Anglers’ righty who has begun his Cape career by throwing 9.2 scoreless innings, Ohman has been Chatham’s best starter this season. He’s made two starts thus far for Chatham, sporting a 2.00 earned run average and punching out 11 batters across nine innings of work.

Nate Isler (Dartmouth), another Ivy League arm, is getting the start opposite Ohman. He’s made two appearances to open his time on the Cape, one of them a start, and hasn’t allowed a run in his five innings. He’s only allowed three hits, and struck out seven batters on the Cape thus far. But he’s also walked six batters, indicating a lack of command that could doom him if the Anglers take advantage of it at the plate.

Yarmouth-Dennis Players To Watch

He was just named the CCBL’s Player of the Week, so fans across the Cape may have already heard Tommy Goodin’s (Vanderbilt) name once before. For the uninitiated, here’s the rundown. Goodin, Y-D’s first baseman, leads qualified Red Sox hitters with an .855 OPS, three home runs and 11 runs batted in. And, after blasting three home runs and going 7-for-17 from June 21 to June 28, Goodin earned those aforementioned Player of the Week honors.

Goodin doesn’t have the highest batting average on the team, though. Looking at qualified hitters, that honor would belong to John Beverley (Georgia State), who currently sports a .343 batting average and a .395 on-base percentage, just five points off of first place. He’s also one of three qualified Red Sox with an OPS above .750. In many ways, Beverley is a very tough out.

Chatham Players To Watch

Rob Rispoli (UConn) is red-hot heading into this matchup against the Red Sox. He’s not one of the A’s qualified hitters yet, as he doesn’t have enough plate appearances to earn that distinction, but he’s consistently been one of the hardest hitting Anglers all season. His .308 batting average and .972 OPS prove that in a vacuum, but his best individual performance might’ve come Monday, where he crushed two doubles and reached base four times.

He had a day off Monday, but if Korbin Reynolds (Vanderbilt) re-enters the lineup against Y-D, he might be due for a big game. The Chatham catcher sports a 1.194 OPS in his last four games, smacking his first three hits of the summer — all for extra bases — in that span. Reynolds has been trading places with Nolan Traeger (Arkansas) recently, but if he keeps this hot streak going, he has a chance to make himself indispensable.

Number To Know: 8

Chatham was in cruise control all game Monday. The Anglers scored in the first inning, then added six more runs in the second to pad their lead. When Chatham added on an eighth run in the top of the sixth, a loss to Brewster at Stony Brook Field seemed improbable.

Until it wasn’t. Colin Fisher (Arkansas) was taken out of the game after six one-run innings, replaced by Wyatt Nadeau (Vanderbilt). Nadeau, making his Cape debut, gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh, trimming that deficit down to 8-5 for the Whitecaps. And Chase Meyer (Arizona State), also making his Cape debut, couldn’t keep that lead in the ninth, allowing Brewster to storm all the way back for a walkoff win.

Just like that, Chatham’s bullpen gave up eight unanswered runs. They’ll need a stronger performance to secure a win over Yarmouth-Dennis.

Last Time They Played

It was Cervantes’ Chatham debut the last time these two squads met, and the game couldn’t have gone much better for him. He threw five innings of no-hit ball, and exited the contest with a 1-0 advantage. Unfortunately, the A’s bullpen couldn’t hold on to that lead.

Yarmouth-Dennis had just four hits, but capitalized on Oisin Lee’s (Notre Dame/Transfer) shaky command in the 4-1 win on June 16. The Chatham reliever allowed two runners to score on wild pitches in a three-run sixth, and was hit with a fourth run after Talan Bell’s (UCF) bases-loaded hit by pitch scored one of his inherited runners in the seventh.
