CHATHAM, Mass. — Once again, the Anglers are on fire.
After a 2-0 win in Wareham Sunday night — the A’s first shutout victory of the season — Chatham is on its second winning streak of three-plus games in the past two weeks. It’s seen some oddities, like a 4-2 win over Hyannis Saturday that saw three Harbor Hawk runs erased due to fog. It’s also seen some domination, like the aforementioned shutout Sunday night.
Now, it’s time to see how long the A’s can keep it up. They travel to Brewster Monday night for their first road division game of the season. Here’s everything to know about the Whitecaps (7-5-1, East) before they host Chatham (7-5-1, East) Monday evening.
Probable Starters
Chatham’s Colin Fisher (Arkansas) was slated to make the start for the A’s Sunday, but manager Dennis Cook opted for a bullpen game, pushing Fisher’s start to Monday. Now, the lefty should be well-rested for his third start of the campaign. Fisher’s pitched 9.1 innings across his two starts thus far, but he’s allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs in that span, good for a 6.75 earned run average. He’s been one of Chatham’s more inconsistent starters, although the entire rotation’s put together strong outings recently. Perhaps Fisher’s due for a breakout.
On the other end, Santiago Garcia (LSU) has been one of the most consistent starters on the Cape this summer. The lefty hasn’t allowed a run in two starts, tossing seven and a third innings and allowing just three hits. Garcia played for Hyannis last summer, where he didn’t allow a run in five appearances, including one start. Chatham looks to be the first team to put a run past Garcia on Sunday.
Brewster Players To Watch
The Whitecaps still boast the league’s home run leader in Jacob Lee (VCU), who’s blasted four dingers in 10 games. One of them came against Chatham, when he deposited a pitch from Gavin Guidry (LSU) over the right field wall at Veterans Field on June 19. The four homers make up almost half of Lee’s hits this year for a moderate .256 average, but his 18 strikeouts are tied for the most in the league.
Meanwhile, infielder Jamie Laskofski (William & Mary) has been the Whitecaps’ hottest hitter over the past week, recording hits in five of his last 12 at-bats for a .417 average. His numbers aren’t too much different ordinarily, as he’s hitting a team-high .311 with a .829 OPS. Just three of his 14 hits have gone for extra bases, but he’s walked more than he’s struck out and been Brewster’s most consistent hitter overall.
Chatham Players To Watch
Chatham’s pitching staff stole the show in the A’s win Sunday, but Bino Watters (LSU) provided all the offense needed. He mashed a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning to put Chatham up 1-0.
For anyone watching Anglers’ games recently, it felt bound to happen. Watters has been making loud contact for weeks, most recently blasting a double that one-hopped the wall in left field on Saturday. And on Sunday, he finally cleared the fence for his first long ball of the year. Should his strong contact continue, he’ll be a must-watch face going forward.
Conversely, his newest teammate in the outfield — West Virginia’s Armani Guzman — didn’t have the best intro to the Cape, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. But the utility man, who arrived on the Cape Sunday, oozes big-play potential as an important piece in the A’s outfield. Guzman hit .321 with 25 extra-base hits and 38 stolen bases for the Mountaineers in 2026, helping them reach the College World Series. Look for Guzman to find his footing Monday in Brewster.
Number To Know: 61
Over Chatham’s last four games, A’s pitchers have struck out opposing batters 61 times, far and away the most in the CCBL in that span. Wareham and Yarmouth-Dennis are tied for second on that list with 50 each.
Sunday’s performance certainly helped those numbers. Anglers pitchers Jack Gleason (Mississippi State), Max Luzarraga (Dallas Baptist), Gavin DeVooght (Michigan), Josh Swink (Liberty) and Angel Cervantes (UCLA) combined for 15 strikeouts against the Gatemen. Guidry even struck out 11 in a little over five innings of work against Hyannis the night prior.
Whatever’s in the water, something is clearly working for Chatham pitchers in the swing-and-miss department. They’ll hope that continues on the road Monday.
Last Time They Played
When Chatham last played Brewster on June 19, the A’s squeaked by with a 5-4 win. Chatham trailed by three runs early but came back with three runs in the fourth and two in the eighth to secure a win. It was Chatham’s second of the season, part of a stretch in which the A’s have won seven of nine.
Guidry got the start for the Anglers, and tossed six innings of three-run ball before Swink took over in the seventh and ultimately recorded the win. Cooper Neville (Alabama) led the way for the Chatham offense with three RBIs, two of which came off a double in the fourth and the other coming off a single in the eighth.
