Game 12 Preview: Chatham vs. Hyannis

CHATHAM, Mass. — Over a quarter of the way through the season, the Chatham Anglers are undefeated after an off day. That trend continued Friday, when the A’s overcame a three-run deficit to down Harwich 6-3 at Veterans Field.
Chatham’s response to the off days — and the streaks that follow — have really been the story of its season. The A’s started 0-4 before the first off day, but responded with a four-game win streak to reach .500. That led into the next off day, which led to a brief two-game winless streak. Now, the Anglers are out of another off day with a win.
Perhaps it’ll lead to another win streak.
They’ll take on Hyannis at home Saturday looking to do just that. Here’s everything to know about the Harbor Hawks (4-7) before they take on Chatham (5-5-1).
Probable Starters
Gavin Guidry (LSU) will be the first Chatham pitcher to make three starts when he takes the hill Saturday for the Anglers. Guidry was Chatham’s Opening Day starter back on June 13, when he pitched just 3.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. He was better in his second outing against Brewster June 19, tossing six innings of three-run ball and striking out five. It brought him to a modest 5.79 earned run average, with about eight strikeouts per nine innings.
On the other side, Ryan Bosch (Wake Forest) is set to get the ball for Hyannis. The lefty hasn’t started a game yet, but made three appearances out of the bullpen for the Harbor Hawks. Bosch boasts a 6.00 ERA through just three innings of work, allowing four hits and striking out five. In his freshman year with the Demon Deacons, he had a 2.21 ERA in 20.1 innings. He’ll lead things off for Hyannis in what’s likely to be a bullpen-heavy game for the Hawks.
Hyannis Players To Watch
Aside from Avilo, who’s been a star on both ends for Hyannis, the Harbor Hawks have a few other standouts in the lineup.
Jon Embury (FGCU) still leads the league with a .424 batting average, knocking 14 hits in 33 at bats. Just two of the hits have gone for extra bases and he still doesn’t have a home run, but Embury’s been one of Hyannis’ most reliable bats all season. The Harbor Hawks struggled to consistently find baserunners last time out against Chatham, and Embury will be crucial to changing that on Saturday.
Otherwise, Hyannis has two other hitters who rank top-10 in the league in OPS, including infielder Charlie Bates. The Stanford product’s hitting just .267, but four of his eight hits have gone for extra bases, including two home runs. He most recently went 2-for-5 in the Harbor Hawks’ loss to Harwich Thursday.
Chatham Players To Watch
Cooper Neville (Alabama) continues to be one of the Cape’s most reliable clutch hitters. The Chatham shortstop leads the league with 14 RBIs, and — after a two-run single in the fifth inning Friday — has now driven in six runs in his past four contests. He’s been the Anglers’ most impactful hitter as of late, and he’ll hope to continue that at home Saturday.
Aside from Neville, Rob Rispoli (UConn) has also been a reliable bat for Chatham. Since being upgraded to the leadoff spot after Rett Johnson’s (NC State) departure for Team USA on June 21, Rispoli’s totaled five hits, four runs scored and two RBIs in four games. Chatham’s offense needs early baserunners to get going, and Rispoli’s a major factor in that.
Number To Know: 11
Through 11 games in the Cape Cod Baseball League season, Hyannis leads the league with 11 home runs. Chatham ranks last in the league with just three, and none of them have come at Veterans Field thus far.
Of course, the long ball tells just a sliver of the story. That’s why the A’s are .500, and Hyannis is a few games below that mark. But it is a reminder that the Harbor Hawks have the pop to make an impact in close games. And if it’s on display Sunday, Hyannis could cause the Anglers’ pitching staff some trouble.
Last Time They Played
The last time the A’s faced Hyannis — on June 21 — they crushed the Harbor Hawks 9-1 at McKeon Park.
Anglers’ starter Oliver Pudvar (UConn) had his best outing of the young campaign, tossing five scoreless innings. He got some early run support with three scores in the first two innings, thanks to a Harlin Hovater (Mississippi State) RBI single, a Neville sac fly and Rob Rispoli (UConn) infield single.
The A’s bats stayed hot through the final few innings, highlighted by a two-run double from Connor Shouse (Texas Tech) and a solo shot by Neville. It capped a four-game win streak with a convincing victory, although the Anglers haven’t enjoyed one since.
