Game 5 Preview: Chatham at Cotuit
CHATHAM, Mass. — If it feels like you just saw Chatham play against Cotuit, it’s because you just saw Chatham play against Cotuit.

Just five games into the season, the Anglers are already set to face the Kettleers for the second time this summer. The first matchup was a nightmarish 8-2 loss, where the A’s committed four errors and struck out 16 times against Cotuit’s arms.

“(I told them) that’s an unacceptable performance,” Anglers manager Dennis Cook said after Chatham’s 7-6 loss to Wareham Monday.

Fortunately, Chatham (0-4, East) already has a chance to redeem itself, when it treks to Cotuit’s (1-2, West) Lowell Park Wednesday. Here’s everything to know ahead of the A’s road matchup against the Kettleers.

Probable Starters

Jack Ohman (Yale) is slated to get the start for Chatham for the first time this season. Ohman pitched to a 5.53 earned run average in 11 starts for the Bulldogs this season, a slight dropoff from his monster freshman All-American campaign in which he had a NCAA-best 1.34 ERA and an 8-1 record. Ohman’s strikeout stuff is still alive and well, though, as he punched out a career-high 90 batters this spring, up from 87 last season. Chatham hopes he can limit a Cotuit offense that plated eight runs against the A’s a few days ago.

Cotuit’s starter, Tristan Hunter (Kentucky), is yet to start a collegiate game in his two years at Kentucky. The righty has made 26 appearances for the Wildcats, and all of them have been out of the bullpen. His career 6.35 earned run average is particularly weak, but his first appearance for the Kettleers showed signs of promise. When these two teams first faced off, Hunter pitched two shutout innings in relief, and struck out three Anglers in his Cape League debut.

Cotuit Players To Watch

In case the 34 home runs and 98 runs batted in last spring weren’t enough of a reason for Cape League pitchers to fear Tague Davis (Louisville), the Cotuit slugger introduced himself to the Veterans Field faithful with a bang Sunday. Facing Anglers lefty Colin Fisher (Arkansas), he blasted a first-inning two-run homer to instantly put Cotuit ahead. He currently sports a .308 batting average, and his 1.102 OPS now ranks fourth in the CCBL.

The other Kettleer who Chatham would rather forget is Hogan Denny (Indiana). Denny didn’t have a homer Sunday, but he scored three of Cotuit’s eight runs and drove in three more with two doubles. The first came against Fisher, and the second came against A’s righty Corey Kling (Arizona). Denny had a strong sophomore season as the Hoosiers’ starting backstop, blasting 14 home runs and notching a 1.099 OPS. He’s continued that momentum on the Cape.

Chatham Players To Watch

He didn’t get a hit in his Chatham debut Tuesday, so Anglers fans could have a chance to watch Bino Watters’ (LSU) first Cape League hit if they make the trip to Cotuit. Watters is coming off a sterling sophomore season at Notre Dame, where he hit .362 with a 1.057 OPS. His impact made him the top transfer in the nation, and it earned him a commitment to LSU not long before his arrival on the Cape.

Rett Johnson’s (NC State) .083 batting average thus far is far from the .381 mark that made the outfielder a freshman All-American, but he’s found different ways to make his impact felt. Johnson’s six walks currently lead all Anglers by two, he’s only struck out once thus far, and his four stolen bases rank third in the CCBL. He’ll leave for Team USA after the next few games, so it would behoove A’s fans to check out the speedy outfielder while they can.

Number To Know: 1

There’s only one team on the Cape with a batting average below .200, one team on the Cape with an on-base percentage below .300, and one team on the Cape with an OPS below .500. Unfortunately for Angler fans, Chatham holds all three of those distinctions.

Outside of a 7-6 loss to Wareham, where the A’s bats briefly came alive, Chatham hasn’t been able to put runners on the basepaths consistently. Their .176 average, .293 OBP and .493 OPS are all league-worst marks. They’ll have to improve upon those marks to end their search for their first win.

Last Time They Played

As previously mentioned, it doesn’t have to go back too far to find the last time these two squads faced off. When Chatham takes the field at Lowell Park Thursday, Cotuit will become the only team that the A’s have faced multiple times in this young season.

Their first matchup came two games ago at Veterans Field, a game where Chatham put together its worst performance of this season so far. The Anglers committed four errors and scored just two runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Kettleers’ offense. That 8-2 loss dropped Chatham to 0-2 on the season.
