CHATHAM, Mass. — Chatham’s 2026 season is off to a slow start. The A’s are 0-3 after consecutive losses to Bourne, Cotuit and Wareham.
The most recent of the three losses came Monday in Wareham. The Anglers’ bats were far better, piecing together eight hits and six runs. The signs of improvement were clear, but still not enough to steal an elusive first win of the season.
The A’s get another chance to secure it at home Tuesday.
Here’s everything to know about the Anglers’ (0-3, East) matchup with Yarmouth-Dennis (3-0, East).
Probable Starters
One of the A’s most promising pitching prospects, Angel Cervantes (UCLA), is set to make his first start of the season Tuesday. The right-hander was a freshman All-American with the Bruins after amassing a 4-1 record and 4.17 earned run average in 49.2 innings of work. Cervantes was primarily a starter, although he made four relief appearances.
The key to his stellar start? Cervantes brings a small plastic triceratops named Jerry to the mound for every appearance as a good luck charm. He confirmed Jerry made the trip to Chatham, and should debut along Cervantes Tuesday.
On the other side, Brown’s Peter Dubie will get the ball for Y-D. Dubie put together a solid 4.55 ERA in 12 starts and 65.1 innings for the Bears. Dubie struck out a team-high 65 batters, while walking 59. He’ll look to start his Cape League campaign hot against a Chatham offense that’s struggled with strikeouts through three games, combining for 40 punchouts.
Yarmouth-Dennis Players to Watch
The Red Sox boast one of the best offenses in the CCBL through three games, and they’re 3-0 because of it.
A main reason for that is John Beverley (Georgia State), who’s hitting .500 with three RBIs through three games with Y-D. He hit .364 and tallied 42 RBIs for the Panthers this spring, paving the way for a hot start on the Cape.
Brodie Johnston (Vanderbilt) has also been mashing for the Red Sox through three games, compiling a 1.238 OPS and .400 average with a home run and three RBIs. That’s coming off a stellar season in Nashville where he started 57 games, hit .333 and mashed 15 home runs. He’ll likely be at the forefront of Y-D’s offensive efforts.
Chatham Players to Watch
Jacob Parker (Mississippi State) had barely spent three hours on Cape Cod by the time he took his first at bat for the Anglers Monday. Actually, considering Wareham’s position across the Sagamore Bridge and on mainland Massachusetts, he may not have even set foot on the Cape, let alone been anywhere close to Chatham.
That didn't seem to matter much to the freshman All-American. On the first pitch he saw, he laced a single up the middle to plate Connor Shouse (Texas Tech) and give the A’s the early advantage. Parker finished his Anglers debut 2-for-4 with two singles and a walk.
That’s exactly what Chatham hopes to expect from Parker. He’s one of the most promising names on the roster and likely won’t be pulled out of the lineup any time soon. Look for him to stay hot Tuesday against Y-D.
Otherwise, Shouse, who paved the way for Parker’s early RBI, has been one of the hottest hitters on the Cape. He went 4-for-5 Monday to solidify his .538 batting average and 1.307 OPS. Look for Shouse to keep swinging the bat well on Tuesday.
Number to Know: 3
Y-D is currently the only three-win team in the CCBL, and one of two undefeated teams — the other being 2-0-1 Cotuit. The Red Sox have scored the second-most runs (18) and have the best team batting average (.253) in the Cape League this season.
Chatham’s fortune has been the polar opposite so far. The A’s have steadily improved offensively, but still sit at 0-3 and have the league’s worst team batting average (.177).
So, Tuesday’s game will be a tale of two trajectories. The Anglers are hoping their bats will stay hot enough to pull off an upset.
Last Time They Played:
Chatham beat the Red Sox 7-4 when the teams last met on August 2, 2025. The A’s managed seven runs on just four hits but walked a whopping 13 times, with three of those walks coming with bases loaded. Meanwhile, Y-D tallied 10 hits but struggled with runners in scoring position.
The Anglers found themselves in a three-run hole early, but battled back to tie the game at four entering the seventh. Chatham scored one run in the top of the seventh before tallying two in the ninth to secure the win.
The A’s, searching for their first win of the campaign, will hope history repeats itself Tuesday.
