CHATHAM, Mass. — Chatham showed signs of progress on Sunday. The Anglers worked counts and even strung together a few runs. It was undoubtedly an improvement from their Opening Day showing against Bourne, a two-hit 5-1 loss.
But it still wasn’t enough to secure a win. Anglers starter Colin Fisher (Arkansas) kept the game competitive for a time, throwing four innings of three-run ball, but the wheels fell off after that. Cotuit added five runs after the fourth, putting the game out of reach for Chatham’s offense.
So now, it’s back to the drawing board for Dennis Cook’s squad. The A’s have a chance to return to the win column Monday.
After beginning its season with two consecutive losses, Chatham (0-2, East) will trek to Wareham’s (0-2, West) Spillane Field. Here’s everything to know ahead of Monday’s road matchup against the Gatemen.
Probable Starters
Of the litany of pitchers on Chatham’s roster, lefty Oliver Pudvar (UConn) might be the one who has the most starting experience. The junior has been a fixture in the Huskies rotation for the past two seasons, making 26 starts and tossing 146 innings for UConn in that span. He’s won more often than not — notching a 13-5 record in his time with the Huskies — and has finished with a sub-5.00 earned run average in his past two collegiate campaigns.
Wareham’s starter, Logan Hastings (Kentucky), can’t say the same. He’s pitched at least 55 innings in his first two collegiate outings for the University of Maryland, but finished with a 5.17 ERA in 2025 and a 5.52 ERA this past spring. His 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings in 2026 was a marked improvement from his freshman year, though, indicating that he might have some swing and miss potential to unlock on the Cape.
Wareham Players To Watch
The Gatemen have a familiar face manning the backstop in Levi Clark (Tennessee). The Volunteer slugger mashed four home runs and hit for a .967 OPS for Wareham last summer, though in a slightly-abridged 20-game sample. As a freshman in 2025, Clark hit for a gaudy 1.053 OPS for Tennessee, but that figure dropped to an .862 mark in his sophomore campaign. This summer, Clark has a chance to rediscover his form ahead of a pivotal junior year for him.
And, just like last summer, Wareham features two-way star Caden McDonald (Florida) in the middle of its lineup. McDonald hit six home runs and put up an .873 OPS across 31 games for the Gatemen last summer, and he had a strong 3.51 ERA in his 25.2 innings on the Cape. That momentum carried him into this past spring. Though he wasn’t an everyday player, his 3.42 ERA as a reliever and 1.081 OPS at the plate indicate he has a legitimate future at both ends.
Chatham Players To Watch
The Anglers have three catchers on the roster right now, so it’s impossible to tell if Nolan Traeger (TCU/Transfer) will get the start behind the dish on any given day. But if he does, he’s a player Chatham fans — and college coaches — might want to get a look at. As a freshman, he hit for a .327 average as the Horned Frogs’ starting backstop in 2025. And while that mark dropped for him this past spring, he doubled his runs batted in total from 17 to 34.
If Traeger doesn’t start, the nod might go to Harlin Hovater (Mississippi State), who had an impressive performance in Chatham’s home opener against Cotuit. He had two of the Anglers’ seven hits in the contest, and it continued his momentum from this past spring. Before committing to Mississippi State, Hovater put up a gaudy .522 on-base percentage across 45 games at Meridian Community College this past spring.
Number To Know: 0
Two games are in the books so far, and the Gatemen have a grand total of zero runs scored. It is the lowest total among teams in the Cape League — behind Chatham’s three.
Wareham’s offense has struggled out of the gate, as players like McDonald and Clark haven’t been able to spur them to instant success just yet. If that trend continues, the A’s could outduel the Gatemen’s lackluster offense.
Last Time They Played
The last time Chatham played Wareham — and the last time the A’s made the trek to Spillane Field — was a trip the A’s would rather forget. On July 29, 2025, the Anglers struggled at the plate in their 9-0 defeat to the Gatemen, and saw their playoff chances dwindle.
Wareham scored three runs in the third inning alone, and Chatham committed three errors in the field to just one hit at the plate. The A’s saw just 26 pitches in the game’s final three innings. Chatham has a chance to redeem itself against the Gatemen this time around, as the Anglers continue searching for their first win
