Game 39 Preview: Chatham at Yarmouth-Dennis
CHATHAM, Mass. — Though there will be no postseason play in Chatham’s first year under manager Dennis Cook, there’s still time to see the Anglers in action before the lights go down on their season.

The A’s take a trip to South Yarmouth Saturday to battle the Red Sox at Red Wilson Field for the final time in 2025. Chatham enters the matchup 1-3 head-to-head versus Y-D, with its lone victory over the Red Sox coming in a 7-2 blowout on July 13. A win for the Anglers would increasingly shake up the East Division’s playoff seeding, making it more difficult for the Red Sox to secure a top-two spot.

Here’s what to know before Chatham (15-20-3, East) battles Yarmouth-Dennis (19-16-3, East) in its penultimate game of the 2025 season.

Probable Starters

Southpaw Gavyn Jones (Oklahoma) will make his fourth and final start of the summer for the Anglers Saturday. He’s made six appearances thus far in 2025, totaling a 3.72 earned run average through 19.1 innings of work. He’s struck out 11 and walked six, while allowing just one home run to opposing hitters. While his 1.55 WHIP is fairly vulnerable, Jones does well at limiting baserunners from crossing the plate.

For the Red Sox, manager Scott Pickler is sending right-hander Tyler Pitzer (Mississippi State) to the mound against Chatham. Pitzler will make his first start of the season Saturday, but he likely won't be fazed, considering he leads Yarmouth-Dennis with a scintilating 0.37 ERA across 24.1 innings of relief. With Y-D attempting to sneak into one of the East Division's top-two seeds, Pickler is bringing the big guns out by starting his Cape League All-Star reliever.

Y-D Players To Watch

Shortstop Armando Briseño (Long Beach State) has only been on the Cape for 15 games, but he’s made a massive impact, belting 20 hits in 55 at-bats for a .364 batting average and .901 OPS. Briseño isn’t a qualified hitter, yet he currently boasts Y-D’s highest batting clip among active players with at least 10 appearances. After staying hot by blasting a home run Friday against Brewster, it’s clear Briseño will be a fixture in the Red Sox’s postseason lineup.

Dean Carpentier (USC) has been one of the more consistent faces for Yarmouth-Dennis this season, playing in 29 games so far and accumulating a .361 on-base percentage. He’s shown solid power by launching three home runs, but he hasn’t been a very proficient run-producer, as he’s driven in just nine runs through 62 at-bats.

Chatham Players To Watch

Jake Hanley’s (Indiana) last trip to Red Wilson Field included his lone home run of the season, a solo shot to dead center field. Through 33 contests with the Anglers this summer, Hanley — one of seven Chatham players to stay for the full season — has batted .233 in 103 at-bats while driving in 17 runs. Hanley’s numbers don’t match the pedigree that the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year holds, but he’s shown flashes of greatness against top-flight CCBL arms.

Another day-one staple of the A’s roster, Cape League All-Star Daniel Jackson (Georgia) will be remembered as Chatham’s top hitter of the 2025 campaign. Jackson leads the team with four home runs, a .424 OBP (the CCBL’s best total) and a .860 OPS. He stands out as the Anglers’ most powerful bat and their most elusive base-stealer, leading Chatham with 11 steals. With only two games left this year, A’s fans should catch Jackson’s final at-bats while they can.

Number To Know: 18

Isaiah Lane (San Diego) is hailed by Cook as the best defensive shortstop he’s ever coached in his five total seasons coaching in Chatham. He even called Lane the best shortstop he saw on the Cape this summer; in this day and age, where many of the best college ballplayers are shortstops, that’s extremely high praise.

But Lane’s arguably been equally as impactful with his bat.

Lane’s 18 RBI are the most of any active Angler. You wouldn’t think a slick-handed shortstop would be the best at delivering in timely run-producing situations, yet the sentiment is true for Lane and the A’s.

Last Time They Played

Despite a three-hit performance from Jackson, including a solo home run in the first inning, the A’s fell to the Red Sox 8-5 at Veterans Field on July 25. Jackson’s OPS rose to a scintillating .955 following the matchup. After Anglers right-handed starter Duke Stone (Mississippi State) struggled out of the gate, Yarmouth-Dennis mounted a large lead Chatham couldn’t match.
