CHATHAM, Mass. — Heading into Chatham’s Saturday matchup against Hyannis, the Anglers were floundering, dropping three consecutive contests to Wareham, Harwich and Yarmouth-Dennis.
In desperate need of a win, Chatham ended its three-game skid, defeating the Harbor Hawks 5-4 in a back-and-forth affair at McKeon Park. While the victory didn’t change the A’s position in the East standings, it gave them some crucial momentum as they return to Veterans Field.
Now, the Anglers take on Bourne for the fourth time this season, hoping to chip away at the three-point gap that stands between them and a playoff spot.
Here’s everything you need to know before Chatham (14-16-3, East) takes on Bourne (15-16-2, West) for the final time in the regular season:
Probable Starters
Gavyn Jones (Oklahoma) gets the ball for the Anglers Sunday, his third start of the Cape Cod Baseball League campaign. Despite a slow start to his summer in Chatham, Jones has turned into one of its most reliable arms. The lefty threw at least five innings in each of his last two starts, giving up just three earned runs in that span. Jones’ earned run average sits at 4.40 through 14.1 innings of work, striking out nine batters while walking six.
For Bourne, Quinn Holt is like a box of chocolates — the Braves have no idea what they are going to get. The Utah Valley righty has only made one appearance out of the bullpen relief appearance in the CCBL this summer, allowing three runs and recording just one out in Bourne’s 12-2 mercy-rule loss to Harwich on July 23. Last summer, Holt had a brief cup of coffee in Chatham, recording a 4.32 ERA in two starts with the A’s.
Bourne Players To Watch
When Jon LeGrande (St. John’s) reaches base, there are few players in the Cape Cod Baseball League who wreak as much havoc as him; his 18 stolen bases rank second on the Cape only to Brewster’s Adam Magpoc (San Diego State). Unfortunately for Chatham, he’s just as good at reaching base as he is at causing disruption on the basepaths. LeGrande leads Bourne with 32 hits, while his .379 on-base percentage ranks third on the Braves.
Which Brave holds the highest OBP? That would be Ryker Waite (Vanderbilt), who has been a fixture at shortstop for the Braves since Opening Day. His gaudy .426 OBP ranks third among qualified CCBL hitters, while his .309 batting average also ranks third. Waite’s 12 stolen bases aren’t anywhere near as impressive as LeGrande’s tally, but he still ranks among the top 10 basestealers on the Cape, meaning that Chatham hurlers will be plenty occupied trying to keep the Braves honest on the basepaths.
Chatham Players To Watch
There’s no player on the Cape who reaches base as effectively as Daniel Jackson (Georgia). Through 31 games, his .450 OBP paces the CCBL by 14 points. Orleans first baseman Michael O’Shaughnessy (Georgia) — who ranks second — only played a total of 21 games before departing the Firebirds on July 18. Of players still on the Cape, no one is in the same stratosphere as Jackson.
On the Anglers, two SEC catchers pace the team in terms of OBP. The first, obviously, is Jackson. The second is Chase Fralick (Auburn), whose impressive .366 OBP places him squarely in the top 20 among qualified CCBL hitters. His .667 OPS might appear unassuming at first glance, but with a 14.3% walk rate that ranks ninth in the Cape, Fralick is one of the best offensive threats Chatham has.
Number To Know: .332
The Anglers don’t make the most contact among CCBL teams, but when their bats connect with the ball, they usually do some serious damage. The A’s rank second on the Cape with a .326 batting average on balls hit in play.
But it appears they may have met their match in that department. Through 33 games, the Braves pace the CCBL with a .332 BABIP. If Chatham wants to secure a crucial home victory, its arms will need to do a good job at keeping Bourne’s bats off the ball.
Last Time They Played
Though the A’s have put together a couple of rough performances against the Braves this season, the last contest between these two was one Chatham fans can look back on fondly.
Exactly a month ago, the Anglers made the trek to Bourne for their third matchup against the Braves this season. Facing Bourne starter Zane Petty (Texas Tech) for the third consecutive time, they pounced on him, chasing him out of the game before the third frame. Chatham erupted for 11 hits en route to a 9-2 victory.
