CHATHAM, Mass. — At 7 p.m., a baseball game will, in fact, take place at Veterans Field, pitting the Anglers against the visiting Gatemen. But by the time the first pitch is released, the show will have already been stolen roughly an hour beforehand.
As the 25th stop on its 50 States in 50 Days tour, ESPN will be hosting its flagship program, SportsCenter, live from Veterans Field an hour before the A’s take on Wareham. The show will be anchored by Molly McGrath — a Boston College graduate — from a remote desk behind the home-plate grandstand.
Fans from all across the Cape will pile into Chatham well before first pitch, hoping to get a glimpse at the evening’s main attraction. But for those who decide to stick around after the show, they’ll essentially be treated to an encore, as the A’s hope to avoid their first loss to Wareham this season.
Before the Anglers (13-13-3, East) take on the Gatemen (15-14, West) for the third time in 2025 Tuesday, here’s everything you need to know about both teams.
Probable Starters
The A’s will send right-hander Jacob Turner (Bowling Green) to the hill for the first start of his Cape League career. The rising senior accumulated 51 strikeouts across 58.2 innings of work this past spring at Bowling Green. Thus far with the Anglers, after joining the active roster as a midseason addition, Turner made one relief appearance on July 15 versus Cotuit, in which he allowed one earned run in two frames. Turner will become the 17th Chatham hurler to notch a start this season.
The Gatemen are trotting out a familiar face to take on the Anglers, with NC State righty Cooper Consiglio set to take the ball for his second start against Chatham this season. It’s safe to say he’ll be hoping for a better outcome this time around, as he allowed four runs and failed to finish the fourth in the A’s June 16 win over Wareham. Since that outing, he’s settled down drastically, lowering his earned run average down to an impressive 3.20 across his five starts on the Cape.
Wareham Players To Watch
Despite the fact he’s only been on the Cape for seven games, Gatemen shortstop Christopher Ramirez (Cal Baptist) has wasted zero time in establishing himself as one of Wareham’s brightest stars. In 21 at-bats so far, he’s already notched 10 hits and slashed for .476/.522/.571, striking out just once thus far. While many players struggle to adjust to the wood bats and the downtime after arriving to the Cape, Ramirez’s learning curve has been nonexistent.
There are few players on the Cape who have a reasonable chance at making an impact both on the mound and at the plate in any given contest. Caden McDonald (Florida) is one of them. With the recent departures of Levi Clark (Tennessee) and Hunter Carns (Florida State), McDonald has emerged as a premier bat for Wareham. He’s registered a gaudy .998 OPS through 21 games, while also notching a 4.32 ERA across 16.2 innings pitched this summer.
Chatham Players To Watch
He might not have been present in the Anglers’ lineup during their Monday tilt against Cotuit, but Reed Stallman (Mississippi State) will almost certainly be making his presence felt when the A’s return to Veterans Field. Stallman has only played three home games in his brief time in Chatham, but in those contests, he’s slashed for a .250/.455/.750 statline. Thus far, his only homer of the season has come in the friendly confines of Veterans Field.
Coming off a red-hot NCAA Regional performance with UNC, Gavin Gallaher (North Carolina) took a fair bit of time to settle into his role with the Anglers, as it took him 23 games to drive in his first run of the summer. However, it seems the A’s new second baseman has finally begun to come into his own. Over the past week, Gallaher leads Chatham with a 1.026 OPS, and he’s fresh off an impressive three-hit performance in the Anglers’ win over Cotuit.
Number To Know: 2.35
After getting off to a red-hot start to open the year, Chatham’s pitching staff went through a bit of a rough stretch as arms such as Nate Taylor (Vanderbilt) and JT Quinn (Georgia) streamed out for various reasons. The A’s — who once held the lowest ERA in the CCBL — have since seen that mark balloon to 4.17, only good for fifth among Cape League teams.
But recently, it seems like they’ve found their groove again. Bolstered by the recent emergence of rotation options such as Gavyn Jones (Oklahoma) and Duke Stone (Mississippi State), Chatham’s pitching staff leads the Cape with a remarkable 2.35 ERA in the past seven days. If this resurgence continues, it might be difficult for Wareham to avoid another loss to the Anglers.
Last Time They Played
Chatham’s bats have seen the ball incredibly well whenever they’ve faced Wareham’s arms this season, and their last matchup was no exception to that rule. On July 1, the Anglers hosted the Gatemen at Veterans Field for the first time in 2025, securing a dominant 11-6 victory.
The since-departed A’s outfielder Henry Ford (Tennessee) was unstoppable in the win, as he drove in five runs with three hits — two of which were doubles. The A’s combined for 12 hits on the day, while Chatham starter Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State/Chicago White Sox) allowed it to coast to victory off a four-inning, two-run performance.
