Game 29 Preview: Chatham at Cotuit

CHATHAM, Mass. — If the Anglers were in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s West Division, they’d be one point shy of first place and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
But this is reality. Chatham is the easternmost team on the Cape. And in the East Division, the A’s 27 points isn’t close to first; it’s dead last.
Trailing Orleans (28 points) for a postseason spot, Chatham has some ground to make up, but it has plenty of time to do it with 12 regular-season games remaining. Coming out of the Cape League All-Star break, the Anglers currently boast the East Division's highest-scoring offense at 4.85 runs per game. However, they’ve also allowed 138 runs, the highest total in the division. The A’s are a streaky team — failing to win back-to-back games since July 1-2 — and to secure playoff qualification status, they’ll need to string together multiple victories eventually.
Monday provides them a prime chance to do so. The Anglers travel to Cotuit’s Lowell Park to take on the West Division's last-place team. The A’s search to grab their first winning streak in a while, coming off a 7-3 victory over Brewster at Veterans Field on July 18.
Here’s what to know before Chatham (12-13-3, East) battles Cotuit (11-15-2, West).
Probable Starters
Gavyn Jones (Oklahoma) pitched a gem last time he was out on the mound, tossing five innings of two-run ball in a win over Orleans on July 16. He’ll tally his second start and fifth appearance of the summer on Monday. In 9.1 innings of work, Jones’ earned run average sits at 5.79 and opponents are batting .297 against him. Though as the lefty showed against Orleans, he’s quite comfortable in a starting spot, giving A’s manager Dennis Cook enough confidence to start him again.
Jones will get to face off against a former Oklahoma teammate, as Cotuit is starting a Sooners defector in Beau Sampson (Tulane). Sampson, a 6-foot-6 southpaw, only got 13 appearances this spring as a sophomore, prompting his transfer to the Green Wave. Thus far with the Kettleers, Sampson has accumulated 10.0 innings over three appearances, posting a vicious 0.90 ERA with 12 Ks to just four walks.
Cotuit Players To Watch
Cotuit may be last in the entire CCBL, but its roster contains arguably the league’s best run producer: catcher Jack Natili (Cincinnati). The Bearcats’ product drove in 20 runs before the All-Star break, tying him with Falmouth’s Maika Niu (Arkansas) for the most on the Cape. Natili’s five home runs and .476 slugging percentage both lead the Kettleers. He’ll likely be a handful for Anglers’ pitching.
Not only does Cotuit have the RBI leader, it has the hits leader, too. Shortstop Ryne Farber (Auburn) is making his name known on the Cape by racking up a CCBL-best 32 hits in 28 games before the All-Star break. Farber’s hitting a mean .305 at the plate with a .777 OPS. He’s not a power guy, but with his gaudy average, two homers and 15 RBI will suffice.
Chatham Players To Watch
In the last two weeks, Chatham’s best position player has been Jake Hanley (Indiana). The reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year stumbled out of the gate to begin his summer with the Anglers. But in the last 15 days, Hanley leads Chatham with a .444 batting average, 12 total hits and a 1.082 OPS. Though he only has one homer, Hanley now stands out as one of the A’s most efficient performers at the plate, bearing a slashline of .284/.375/.419.
Freshman catcher Cade Arrambide (LSU) is a major breakout candidate for the Anglers as they approach their final quarter of regular-season play. Arrambide has played in eight games for Chatham thus far after arriving to the Cape late — he was occupied winning the College World Series. The highly-touted backstop has notched a .548 OPS in 22 at-bats, K’ing 13 times compared to three walks drawn. Since Noah Miller (Michigan) exited Chatham over the weekend, Arrambide is bound to see more chances to improve upon his numbers.
Number To Know: 2
Two Anglers’ players blasted home runs in this past weekend’s CCBL All-Star Game. Ashton Larson (Texas) belted a two-run shot in the fourth inning and Daniel Jackson (Georgia) entered off the bench to deliver a two-run homer in the sixth, as both Chatham players helped spur the East Division to a 13-8 victory over the West.
Larson, the East’s starting designated hitter, and Jackson, an All-Star reserve catcher, both rank among the Anglers’ top bats. The two combined for four home runs before the All-Star break, though maybe their performances this weekend will set the stage for a powerful end-of-season stretch.
Last Time They Played
On July 15, the Anglers suffered a heartbreaking 4-2 loss to the Kettlers in 10 innings at Veterans Field. Chatham quickly responded to an early 2-0 deficit; Reed Stallman (Mississippi State) crushed a solo homer and Hanley tallied an RBI sacrifice fly to knot things at 2-2 by the end of the fourth frame.
A’s left-hander Josh Swink (Liberty) unleashed a scintillating 4.2-inning shutout relief outing to keep Cotuit at bay down the stretch, setting up a walk-off chance in the ninth for Chatham. The Anglers loaded the bases but left the frame empty-handed, and the Kettleers promptly outscored the A’s 2-0 in the 10th.
