Game 28 Preview: Chatham vs. Brewster
CHATHAM, Mass. — The Anglers might be the most volatile team on the Cape. At this point, it’s nearly impossible for them to put together two consecutive winning efforts.

On Tuesday, Chatham followed a 7-2 Sunday win against Yarmouth-Dennis by falling flat in a 4-2 loss to Cotuit at Veterans Field. And after bouncing back from their loss to the Kettleers with an 8-7 comeback victory over Orleans Wednesday, the A’s came crashing back down to earth with an 8-1 loss against Hyannis the following night.

Now, the Anglers host Brewster at Veterans Field, hoping to kickstart their offense and find some consistency. Keeping in pace with current trends, it seems like the contest should be ripe for a “get-right” game for Chatham. But it seems like you can never tell which version of the A’s will show up on any given night.

Ahead of Chatham’s (11-13-3, East) second consecutive home contest Friday against Brewster (15-11-1, East), here’s a preview on both sides.

Probable Starters

Following his last performance, it’s no surprise that Duke Stone (Mississippi State) is picking up a second start for Chatham. Facing Yarmouth-Dennis Sunday in his first start since his junior year of high school, Stone absolutely dominated the Red Sox, pitching 5.0 shutout innings in the A’s win. After the game, there was little doubt in Chatham manager Dennis Cook’s mind that the Bulldog righty was going to be picking up a second start in the near future.

“I’m sure he’ll start,” Cook said postgame. “He earned (the chance) to start the next game.”

For Brewster, James DeCremer (Arkansas) will make his second start of the season. As a redshirt freshman at Oregon State, DeCremer tallied three starts in 14 appearances, posting a 5.34 earned run average across 28.2 innings. He transferred away from Corvallis this past offseason, and after boosting his stock by registering a 1.35 ERA in his 6.2 innings with the Whitecaps, he earned a commitment to the Razorbacks.

Brewster Players To Watch

Over the past week, Dalton Wentz (Wake Forest) has been Brewster’s hottest hitter by a country-mile. In his past five games, Wentz has slashed .313/.400/.750/1.150, crushing his two homers of the summer and driving in six runs in that stretch. While his season totals might not be nearly as impressive — Wentz currently holds a .266 batting average and a .742 OPS — it’s clear that he’s on a sharp upward trajectory heading into the remainder of the season.

His .261/.393/.348/.741 slashline might not seem that gaudy on the surface, but there are few players in the Cape Cod Baseball League as adept at creating runs from thin air than Adam Magpoc (San Diego State). Despite ranking just eighth on Brewster in at-bats — having not become a full-time starter until a few weeks into the summer — Magpoc holds team-leads in both runs (13) and stolen bases (17), with the latter figure also leading the Cape.

Chatham Players To Watch

Since he was inexplicably left out of Chatham’s lineup against Hyannis, Jake Hanley (Indiana) will be a sight for sore eyes for Anglers fans when he inevitably makes his return against Brewster Friday. While he got off to a bit of a sluggish start this season, Hanley has been red-hot as of late, leading the team with a .444 average and a 1.151 OPS over the past week. Despite having an OPS below .700 for most of the summer, his .783 mark places him in the top 15 among qualified CCBL hitters.

This isn’t news to anyone, but Daniel Jackson (Georgia) is scorching baseballs. Though he wasn’t named an All-Star starter, Jackson ranks third on the Cape with a monstrous .951 OPS, and he only added to his gaudy statline with his third home run of the season against Hyannis — a solo blast to right-center. As he leads the Anglers in average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS, it’s clear Jackson is the lifeblood of the A’s offense.

Number To Know: 8

The number eight holds statistical significance in various ways for Chatham. It could refer to the RBI count of Chase Fralick (Auburn), who has begun to heat up after a sluggish start to the season. It could be the hit count of Roman Martin (UCLA), who has become a crucial presence in the A’s lineup thus far. Or, it could be Hyannis’ run count in the Anglers’ devastating loss on Thursday.

But the number’s true significance doesn’t lie in any of those statistics. In this case, eight is referring to the amount of walks Chatham conceded to the Harbor Hawks last night. While the A’s managed to outhit Hyannis 4-3, they still lost the game by seven runs. How is this? The free pass was simply too prevalent, as they allowed eight bases on balls compared to Hyannis’ two.

Last Time They Played

On July 9, the Anglers opened the second half of their season against Brewster. It was an utter disaster for Chatham, whose offense was completely dominated from start to finish in an eight-inning, fog-shortened 2-0 loss to the Whitecaps.

Austin Breedlove (Tennessee/transfer) shined in his final start of the summer for Chatham, pitching five shutout innings to give the A’s a chance to snag a win. However, the Anglers responded by going 0-for-8 at the plate with runners in scoring position which, at the time, extended their scoreless streak to 19 innings.
