In 2017, Veterans Field was featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays. Now, eight summers later, ESPN’s flagship SportsCenter is set to air live from the Chatham ballpark on July 22.
On July 16, 2017, in a 2-0 A’s win over the Bourne Braves, Chatham’s Shea Langeliers sent a fly ball deep to left-center at Veterans Field. Bourne outfielder Andy Atwood tracked the soaring line drive to the wall, lept, and snared the ball out of mid-air as he flipped over the outfield fence.
Chatham broadcaster Drew Carter called the highlight-reel play, which was captured by Chatham videographer Casey Hamel. That same evening, it aired as a Top 10 play on SportsCenter.
Both Carter and Hamel work at ESPN today. Carter, a 2019 graduate of Syracuse University, serves as an ESPN play-by-play broadcaster and host, calling college football, college basketball, men’s and women’s collegiate lacrosse, softball and the PLL while anchoring SportsCenter, ACC Network and ESPN International coverage. He’s also the television play-by-play voice of the Boston Celtics on NBC Sports Boston. Hamel, a 2018 Fairfield University graduate, works behind the scenes on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show.
Veterans Field returns to the SportsCenter spotlight when ESPN broadcasts live from Chatham at 6 p.m. on July 22 before the Anglers face the Wareham Gatemen. The show marks the 25th stop on ESPN’s 50 States in 50 Days tour, designed to bring SportsCenter and its anchors directly to fans across America.
ESPN reporter Molly McGrath will anchor the program from a remote SportsCenter desk behind the home-plate grandstand at Veterans Field.
Fans are encouraged to arrive before the game to enjoy ESPN giveaways and watch Veterans Field again take the SportsCenter stage.
