Game 25 Preview: Chatham vs. Cotuit
CHATHAM, Mass. — The Anglers may be last in the East Division, but their run production says the best is yet to come for first-year manager Dennis Cook’s squad.

Chatham’s 118 runs rank first in the East, and it also ranks first in its division with a .251 team batting average. Consistent staples like Cape Cod Baseball League All-Stars Daniel Jackson (Georgia) and Jackson Freeman (Northwestern) have carried the A’s offense, though the group has taken new life with recent arrivals Ashton Larson (LSU/transfer) and Roman Martin (UCLA) providing a significant spark.

If the Anglers’ red-hot bats can be supplemented by more stellar pitching outings — like Sunday, when right-hander Duke Stone (Mississippi State) twirled 5.0 shutout frames of one-hit ball against Y-D — they’re sure to be postseason bound.

Searching to get back in the playoff picture, Chatham battles Cotuit Tuesday night at Veterans Field. Here’s what to know prior to the Anglers’ (10-11-3, East) home matchup versus the Kettleers (10-12-2, West), whose +22 run differential leads the CCBL.

Probable Starters

A player Cook praised for his desire to stay in Chatham for a while this summer, Tate Carey (Michigan) will make his third start of the 2025 campaign Tuesday. Carey’s earned run average sits at 4.26 through 12.2 innings of work. He’s struck out nine batters and walked seven, while holding opposing teams to a .234 batting average. The freshman right-hander will become the fourth A’s hurler — and lone active Angler — to tally a third start this season.

Kettleers’ first-year skipper Loren Hibbs will send Ryan Buckler (FAU) to the hill for his second start of the Cape League campaign. Buckler has mowed down hitters across 11.2 frames for Cotuit, sporting a filthy 0.77 ERA and 0.69 WHIP. Tuesday will be the righty’s seventh appearance of the year — in his previous six, Buckler gave up one earned run.

Cotuit Players To Watch

Similarly to the Anglers, the Kettleers display a potent offense despite ranking in the bottom two of its divisional standings. For Cotuit’s vaunted lineup, catcher Jack Natili (Cincinnati) leads the Kettleers with five home runs, 19 RBI (which leads the CCBL) and a .957 OPS. His .557 slugging percentage is the second-best mark on the Cape. Natilli was named as the starting catcher for the West Division in this year’s CCBL All-Star Game.

Also starting for the West will be Ryne Farber (Auburn). Farber’s been another top-flight talent in the Kettleers’ lineup, boasting a .818 OPS with a team-high 28 hits and 24 games played. He totes some power as an infielder, belting two homers and driving in 13 runs thus far. As a player who delivers consistently good at-bats — striking out 12.5% of the time compared to walking 10.6% — Farber is a tough pest for any pitching staff to fend off.

Chatham Players To Watch

The Big Ten Freshman of the Year made a major statement Sunday. Jake Hanley (Indiana) towered a solo home run in the Anglers’ 7-2 victory over Yarmouth-Dennis, his first long ball of the Cape League season after blasting 14 this spring with the Hoosiers. Hanley started off this summer slowly from the dish, progressively dropping in the A’s batting order. However, buoyed by his recent solid performances, the 6-foot-6 first baseman’s .786 OPS ranks 14th in the CCBL.

Shortstop Isaiah Lane (San Diego) also hit his first homer of the year Sunday in Y-D, to which he enjoyed a raucous reception from his teammates in the dugout. Lane has been repetitively hailed as the best defensive shortstop that Cook has ever coached in Chatham, and even the best shortstop currently in the CCBL. But Lane’s offensive production takes his value to a whole new level. He’s racked up 14 RBI and totaled 16 hits thus far, also ranking second among active Anglers’ players in steals with three.

Number To Know: 0

There’s no doubt Nate Taylor will go down as one of the best arms to come through Chatham this summer. Taylor leads the Anglers with a 2.93 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP across 15.1 innings, and ranks second in strikeouts with 22. But, there’s a problem. Taylor left Chatham a few days ago before transferring to Vanderbilt Monday. Consequently, as Taylor is the A’s only qualified Anglers’ pitcher, they now have zero qualified pitchers on the active roster.

Essentially, Chatham doesn’t have many arms who have started a boatload of games nor pitched an abundance of innings. However, a lengthy appearance from Carey Tuesday would certainly propel him into a qualified pitcher in the CCBL record books.

Last Time They Played

It’s been awhile since these two last met — back on June 25 at Cotuit’s Lowell Park. In a 10-inning thriller, the Anglers and Kettleers tied 6-6. Most of the individual performers who defined the game have since left the Cape, however. Clutch home runs late by Ace Reese (Mississippi State) and Henry Ford (Tennessee), as well as a 4.1-inning, four-strikeout relief outing from Taylor, helped the A’s salvage a tie with the Kettleers.
