CHATHAM, Mass. — With how the Cape Cod Baseball League playoffs are presently constructed, only one team in the East Division will miss the postseason. As of right now, it’s Chatham.
The stakes were clear in the Anglers’ contest against the Firebirds: The loser is out of playoff position. Chatham and Orleans were battling it out for fourth place, with the A’s up by just one point over the Firebirds.
After five innings of play, the home of the fifth-inning fog lived up to its name, as the Firebirds secured fourth-place — and a playoff spot — with a 5-2 win at Veterans over Chatham. Now, the Anglers hit the road again, making their second trip to Red Wilson Field to take on Y-D.
Here’s everything to know ahead of Chatham’s (9-11-3, East) road contest against Yarmouth-Dennis (13-8-2, East) Sunday.
Probable Starters
As starters continue to leave the Anglers, Chatham manager Dennis Cook is going to have to find length somehow. His most recent attempt to fill the rotation comes in the form of Mississippi State righty Duke Stone, who has not started any of his five appearances thus far. His longest appearance this summer came in Chatham’s 6-1 loss against Harwich on July 5, when he pitched two scoreless frames to lower his earned run average to 4.05.
While the Anglers are desperately seeking out starters to fill innings, Yarmouth-Dennis could not be in a more different position. On Sunday, Wichita State righty Brady Hamilton is set to make his fifth start of the season for the Red Sox. Chatham does not have a single pitcher with more than three starts this summer. Hamilton has notched a pristine 1.00 ERA across his 18.0 innings of work, limiting opponents to a .210 batting average.
Yarmouth-Dennis Players To Watch
With the recent departure of Cody Miller (East Tennessee State), there is now only one Yarmouth-Dennis position player who has scored double-digit runs this season. It’s Dean Carpentier (USC), who leads the Red Sox with a grand total of 10 runs. Despite registering just 40 at bats in his 19 appearances, Carpentier currently leads active Y-D hitters with an .500 slugging percentage and .848 OPS.
On Saturday, the Red Sox had two position players selected to the Cape League All-Star Game: Carpentier and Yomar Carreras (Rutgers). Despite the fact he still hasn’t turned 19 years old, Carreras has wasted no time making himself comfortable on the Cape. Now that Miller and AJ Soldra (UConn) have left, Carreras holds the lead among active Yarmouth-Dennis hitters with 17 hits and a .298 average this season.
Chatham Players To Watch
Speaking of All-Stars, Chatham now has a two-time Cape League All-Star starter on its roster. After starting in right field for the East in 2025, Ashton Larson (LSU/transfer) has earned his second consecutive All-Star start this summer as the East’s designated hitter. Despite playing just 10 games so far, Larson has been able to make an immediate impact in Chatham’s lineup. In 38 at bats, he’s slashed for a very respectable .316/.366/.421/.787.
While he won’t be joining Larson in the East’s starting lineup, Daniel Jackson (Georgia) has also been named to the All-Star team as a reserve. As has been the case for almost the entirety of the season, Jackson paces qualified Anglers with 16 runs, a .465 on-base percentage and a .900 OPS. He also carries an obscene .484 BABIP thus far, which leads qualified Angler hitters by 116 points. There are few Chatham players making louder contact than Jackson.
Number To Know: 1
A little over halfway through the season, it’s no secret Chatham’s rotation has devolved into a revolving door. Luke Jackson (Dallas Baptist) made his final start against Yarmouth-Dennis on Tuesday, while Austin Breedlove (Tennessee/transfer) and Nate Taylor (Georgia/transfer) each departed after their recent starts against Brewster and Harwich, respectively.
“We got a couple guys coming in, and I’m still searching,” Cook said.
But until those reinforcements arrive, Cook is left with a barebones rotation that severely lacks experience. Only four pitchers on Chatham’s roster have notched a start this summer: Tate Carey (Michigan), Kaden Smith (TCU), Mason Bixby (Oklahoma) and JJ Glasscock (West Virginia). Of those four, Carey is the only one who has made multiple starts this summer.
Last Time They Played
This is the second time Chatham has faced Yarmouth-Dennis in the past week, with the A’s having hosted Y-D at Veterans Field Tuesday. It’s safe to say the Anglers will be hoping for a much better outcome this time around.
Coming off an 11-run outburst against Falmouth, the A’s fell flat, dropping back under .500 in their 3-0 loss to the Red Sox. Luke Jackson (Dallas Baptist) conceded two runs to Y-D in his final start of the summer, and while the game was ultimately played in its entirety following an 80-minute lightning delay, the interruption prevented the Anglers from finding any sort of momentum.
