Game 15 Preview: Chatham at Brewster
CHATHAM, Mass. — Well, it’s safe to say the Anglers’ second meeting with Brewster won’t end prematurely via a fog out. But it might end early due to darkness.

Stony Brook Field, the sight of Wednesday’s battle, is one of three ballparks in the Cape Cod Baseball League that doesn’t have overhead lights. Anytime you face the Whitecaps, early runs come at a premium, since each game has a quick expiration date. With how the A’s have performed as of late, though, that shouldn’t be a grave concern.

An offensive outpouring took place at Veterans Field Tuesday, with Chatham unleashing nine runs over a two inning stretch, including six in the third. It continued its hot stretch at the plate with a season-high 12 hits, spurring its 11-6 win over Wareham. Despite early scoring struggles, the Anglers now rank second in the CCBL with 4.86 runs per game.

Here’s everything to know before Chatham (5-6-3, East) takes on Brewster (9-5, East) at Stony Brook Field.

Probable Starters

Right-hander Tate Carey (Michigan) will tally his third Cape League appearance and second start Wednesday versus the Whitecaps. In Carey’s first two games, he accumulated a 4.76 earned run average, struck out five batters and only issued one base on balls across 5.2 innings pitched. Carey got the loss in his Chatham debut on June 20 against Yarmouth-Dennis, allowing three runs in 4.2 frames. But in his next outing against Bourne on June 27, Carey pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief without yielding a hit or walk.

But Brewster’s starter, Alex Philpott (South Carolina), is even better at limiting walks; he hasn’t issued any. Over three appearances consisting of 6.2 relief innings, Philpott stands out as one of the Whitecaps’ top arms, boasting a 0.00 ERA with eight Ks. Though opponents are batting nearly .250 against him, his strikeout ability and knack for extra-base hit prevention present a tough challenge for opposing hitters. After spending two years at Florida, Philpott is transferring to South Carolina next season.

Brewster Players To Watch

While their team hitting statistics aren’t world-beating, the Whitecaps lay claim to two of the top hitters on the Cape. Numbers wise, the better of the two is right fielder Josiah Ragsdale (Boston College), whose .975 OPS ranks first among qualified batters in the East Division. Though Ragsdale hasn’t gone yard yet, his whopping 16 hits are tied for the most in the CCBL. He’s additionally taken seven walks, contributing to his league-leading on-base percentage of .500.

Just behind Ragsdale is his corner-outfield mate Blake Cyr (Florida). The Gators’ product has tallied 12 hits thus far, ranking tied for second on the Whitecaps. Cyr is slashing .308/.357/.487 with one home run and five RBI. While Cyr’s volume stands out, his efficiency doesn’t. He’s struck out 11 times compared to just two bases on balls. Carey will need his best swing-and-miss stuff to keep Cyr quiet on Wednesday.

Chatham Players To Watch

The Tennessee Volunteers have a prominent presence on this Anglers’ squad. Yet, their top player on Chatham didn’t even play in Tennessee last season: Henry Ford. The center fielder transferred from Virginia after two seasons to join the SEC, and will likely pass up a potential selection in the 2025 MLB Draft to play for the Volunteers. Ford has been one of the A’s best hitters thus far, totaling a .828 OPS, 15 hits and a team-best 13 RBI. He posted a gaudy five-RBI performance in Tuesday’s win over Wareham, finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles.

Another Volunteer arrived in Chatham Tuesday, with righty Austin Breedlove (Tennessee) joining its active roster. Breedlove transferred to Tennessee ahead of the 2024 season, and he posted a strong 3.42 ERA in 25 appearances, including two starts. He might not appear against Brewster, but Breedlove is primed to add reliable SEC experience to the Anglers’ bullpen.

Number To Know: .310

Since June 24, Chatham’s offense has taken on a completely new identity. One that used to feature strikeouts and groundouts now features unabating execution from start to finish. In the last seven days of CCBL play, the Anglers are batting a league-best .310 — by far their top offensive stretch of the year. They’ve also scored a CCBL-high 35 runs in that span.

The A’s are 3-1-1 in their last five contests after beginning the season 2-5-2. Both players and first-year manager Dennis Cook repeatedly said time was of the essence for Chatham’s offense to turn a new leaf. Turns out, they were exactly right.

Last Time They Played

Chatham only needed five innings to secure a 2-1 victory over Brewster on June 28 at Veterans Field. The game was ruled final following a 30-minute delay amid the bottom of the fifth, after Whitecaps’ center fielder Ty Head (NC State) clearly could not spot a fly ball coming toward him.

The Anglers were propelled by a dominant performance from right-hander JT Quinn (Georgia) in his third and final start of the summer. Quinn punched out nine and allowed just one run, earning his first-career win in the CCBL. A two-run double in the first inning by Jackson Freeman (Northwestern) proved to be all the offense Chatham needed.
