CHATHAM, Mass. — The first time Chatham faced Falmouth this season, it was clear the Anglers had some rust to shake off. On Opening Day, the A’s were swinging with reckless abandon, and their over-eagerness ended up yielding 17 strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to the Commodores.
When the A’s faced Falmouth on Sunday, however, it was a completely different story. Over its previous four games, Chatham’s offense had finally been playing up to its potential, erupting for 24 runs in that span. Despite ultimately falling 9-7 in a back and forth affair against the Commodores, that trend continued, with the Anglers smacking 10 hits and putting up five runs in the fifth inning.
That performance serves as better evidence than any that these are not the same Anglers. Thirteen games into the season, Chatham has grown leaps and bounds offensively. Its bullpen just faltered down the stretch. Now, the A’s will look to put it all together Tuesday, when they return to Veterans Field to host Wareham.
Here’s everything to know before Chatham (4-6-3, East) takes on Wareham (6-7, West) for the second time this season.
Probable Starters
With arms coming in and out of Chatham, the Anglers’ rotation has seen some spots open up recently. The most recent beneficiary of that development is Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State), who will be making his first start of the 2025 season Tuesday. Davis made five starts for Chatham in 2023, but he posted a 6.75 earned run average in those appearances. In his return to Veterans Field, Davis made a much stronger impression, striking out seven in four scoreless innings of relief in the A’s 7-7 tie against Harwich.
Once he steps on the mound, Wareham righty Logan Baisley (Florida Gulf Coast) will have already surpassed his collegiate career start total on the Cape. The freshman started just two of his 11 appearances with the Eagles this year, yet he is set to make his third start of the season for Wareham on Tuesday. Thus far, Baisley hasn’t impressed for the Gatemen, posting a 6.75 ERA and giving up 11 hits across 6.2 innings of work.
Wareham Players To Watch
Chatham fans might recognize one of Wareham’s top sluggers, as Gatemen first baseman Ty Dalley (Clemson) had a brief cup of coffee with the Anglers in 2024. In his brief four-game stint in Chatham, Dalley posted a meager .445 OPS, registering just two hits in 14 plate appearances for the A’s. After transferring from Mercer to Clemson, he has significantly improved in his return to the Cape Cod Baseball League, ranking second among qualified Gatemen with a .780 OPS.
Who ranks first, you ask? That would be Levi Clark (Tennessee), a freshman phenom who has lit the Cape League on fire in his first season with Wareham. Primarily playing as a designated hitter for the Volunteers, Clark made an immediate impact in his debut collegiate campaign, hitting 10 homers and notching a 1.053 OPS across 51 games. Through nine games with Wareham, Clark has split time at catcher and left field, and he currently ranks second among qualified CCBL hitters with a gaudy .998 OPS.
Chatham Players To Watch
He doesn’t hit the most home runs. And he certainly wasn’t among the most highly-touted Anglers heading into the season. But through 12 games with Chatham, Jackson Freeman (Northwestern) has done nothing but rake. In the last week of CCBL play, he’s been box office, hitting for a .500 average and a 1.238 OPS in that span. Buoyed by that red-hot stretch, the Chatham right fielder now leads the team with a .333 average and a .881 OPS.
Yet, Freeman isn’t the only Chatham outfielder who should be on your radar heading into Tuesday. On Sunday, the Anglers added Ashton Larson (LSU/transfer) to the lineup, and he made an immediate impact with a single and a walk against Falmouth. Larson was among Chatham’s strongest hitters in 2024, earning Cape League All-Star honors and claiming the Thurman Munson Award at season’s end. Having just entered the transfer portal, he’ll likely be looking to impress potential suitors in his return to Veterans Field Tuesday.
Number To Know: 2.77
For Chatham’s pitching staff, it seems to be a tale of two locales early in the season. In seven games away from Veterans Field thus far, the Anglers rank dead last among CCBL teams with a 5.25 road ERA, giving up a league-worst .286 average in those contests.
But at home, it's been a completely different story for the A’s pitching staff. Thus far, the Anglers rank third in the CCBL with a miniscule 2.77 ERA in six games at Veterans Field, and they’re also tied for second with a .204 average in those games. With the Anglers returning to friendly confines against Wareham, their pitching staff could be due for a bounceback performance after allowing nine runs to Falmouth.
Last Time They Played
In the third game of this nascent 2025 season, Chatham traveled to Spillane Field in what was essentially a “get right game” for the Anglers. The A’s struggled out the gate, notching just two runs in season-opening losses to Falmouth and Bourne.
But on June 16, Chatham managed to secure its first win of the season — and of the Dennis Cook era — with a 9-2 victory over Wareham. Anglers starter Nate Taylor (Georgia/transfer) was utterly dominant, striking out 10 across four perfect innings. And the A’s pounced on Gatemen starter Cooper Consiglio for four runs, chasing him from the game in the fourth inning.
