CHATHAM, Mass. — Heading into the Anglers’ matchup at Doran Park Friday, it had been five games since they’d secured a victory. But with ties against Harwich and Cotuit directly preceding Chatham’s contest against Bourne, it was evident the A’s were on the verge of breaking through.
The last two times Chatham faced Bourne righty Zane Petty, he turned in dominant performances, notching just a 1.74 earned run average in 10.1 innings against the Anglers. Evidently, the third time's the charm for the Anglers, as they pounced on him early on Friday.
Petty gave up one run in the first, and the A’s tacked on three more in the second to ensure he wouldn’t make it out of the third. While the Braves attempted to rally, their efforts weren’t enough as Chatham ended its five-game winless streak.
Following their 9-2 victory, the Anglers return to Veterans Field, where they’ll take on a Brewster squad that’s dropped four of its last five games after starting the season 6-0.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Chatham’s (3-5-3, East) first matchup against Brewster (7-4, East) this season.
Probable Starters
Through 11 games, there are few Anglers starters who have been more productive than JT Quinn (Georgia). On Opening Day against Falmouth, he struck out 10 Commodores and allowed just one run in 5.1 innings. And in Chatham’s 6-1 loss to Bourne, he allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Quinn’s devastating fastball/slider combo has stymied Cape Cod Baseball League hitters, and he currently leads the Anglers with 16 strikeouts.
Brewster will be turning to a bit of an unknown commodity on the mound, as righty Trevor Hansen (UC Irvine) is yet to make his Cape League debut. After putting up a pedestrian 5.69 earned run average as a freshman with the Anteaters, he broke out as a sophomore, notching a sterling 3.30 ERA in 95.1 innings for UC Irvine in 2025.
Brewster Players To Watch
Thus far in this young season, the Cape League’s best hitter belongs to Brewster. Josiah Ragsdale (Boston College) has been dominant as the Whitecaps’ right fielder. Despite not having a home run yet, Ragsdale leads the CCBL in batting average (.400), on-base percentage (.526), OPS (1.026), stolen bases (11) and runs batted in (nine). He reaches base more than anyone, and once he’s on, he’s a force to be reckoned with on the basepaths.
You don’t have to look far to find Brewster’s second star. Blake Cyr (Florida) has been the Robin to Ragsdale’s Batman thus far, and the Whitecaps left fielder is conveniently located in the opposite corner of Brewster’s outfield. While he doesn’t walk nearly as much as Ragsdale does, his power-heavy approach has placed him second in the Cape with a .515 slugging percentage, and he is currently fourth among CCBL hitters with a .904 OPS.
Chatham Players To Watch
With Ace Reese (Mississippi State) departing for Team USA prior to Chatham’s contest against Bourne, Ethan Mendoza (Texas) was given a fresh opportunity. After leading off for most of the season, he was briefly demoted to sixth, but he made his way back up to the three-hole against Bourne. The move paid dividends, with Mendoza reaching base three times and driving in three runs to spur Chatham’s offensive explosion.
Sitting just one spot behind Mendoza in the order, it appears that Chase Fralick (Auburn) has finally knocked the rust off. Heading into Friday, he carried a meager .154 average for Chatham. But against Bourne, Fralick ignited for the first time this season, reaching base four times in five plate appearances and driving in his first run of the season. As one of Chatham’s most highly-touted prospects, his offensive awakening will be crucial for the A’s moving forward.
Number To Know: 22
It’s no secret that Chatham’s offense struggled through the infancy of the 2025 season. The results simply weren’t aligning with the talent at its disposal, and Anglers manager Dennis Cook made that fact very clear through numerous postgame meetings and interviews. In Chatham’s first eight games, they scored just 26 runs, an average of 3.25 runs per game.
But as of late, the Anglers have been swinging some of the hottest bats in the Cape. Across their last three games, the A’s have scored 22 runs, an average of 7.33 runs per game. With Chatham’s top talent finally beginning to adjust after weeks away from live pitching, its offense appears to be finally reaching its potential.
Last Time They Played
It was a good day for Anglers fans the last time these two squads faced off. On July 30, 2024, Chatham thoroughly dominated the Whitecaps, clinching its first playoff spot in five seasons with a 13-2 win.
The Anglers jumped on Brewster’s pitching staff from the outset, putting together a six-run second inning off of Whitecaps’ starter Darien Smith. The victory was truly punctuated by Luke Yuhasz (Louisiana Lafayette), who blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning to end the game by run-rule.
