Game 11 Preview: Chatham at Bourne
CHATHAM, Mass. — The Cape Cod Baseball League’s schedule-makers clearly had some fun this year. Just 11 games in, Chatham will face Bourne for a third time this season. Before the Anglers even square off once with East Division foes Brewster and Orleans, they’ll already be close to done with their Bourne season series.

And maybe they want to be, considering their 0-2 record against the Braves thus far.

Bourne outscored Chatham 10-3 in the two sides’ previous two battles. The A’s bats have shown more life recently, though, dropping seven runs on Harwich Tuesday and hammering two home runs in Cotuit Wednesday. They’ll get the ultimate chance at retribution Friday, as the Anglers will face a very familiar arm on the mound.

Here’s how Chatham (2-5-3, East) and Bourne (4-5-1, West) stack up heading into their third matchup of 2025.

Probable Starters

Making his second start of the summer Friday is Luke Jackson (Texas A&M/transfer), one of seven A’s pitchers to tally a start this season. In his Angler debut against Cotuit on June 19, the SEC product gave up one earned run in 4.0 innings of work. Though he issued four walks, he performed well under pressure-filled situations and struck out two Kettleers on the night. The 6-foot-2 righty tallied five Cape League appearances for Orleans in 2024, registering a 2.35 ERA in 7.2 frames.

For Bourne, manager Scott Landers will opt to send right-hander Zane Petty (Texas Tech) out to the bump for his third start of this young season — all of which came against Chatham. Petty’s first two starts proved he can give this A’s order a hard time. In 10.1 innings versus Chatham, Petty’s ERA sits at 1.74 while he’s punched out 12 batters. The Anglers are batting a lowly .143 clip against Petty.

Bourne Players To Watch

Logan Hughes (Texas Tech) might have some extra motivation to provide insurance runs for his Red Raider teammate, Petty. A quarter of the way through the 2025 campaign, Hughes is a bonafide MVP candidate. The corner outfielder has tanked two home runs, accumulated 10 hits and totaled a 1.023 OPS — the best mark in the CCBL. Hughes entered this summer fresh off a 1.107 OPS, 19-homer campaign at Texas Tech this spring.

Sticking in the outfield, Jon LeGrande (St. John’s) poses a threat both as a high-contact hitter and a dangerous baserunner. LeGrande’s .316 batting average ranks fourth on the Braves, while his 12 hits lead the team over 10 regular-season games. LeGrande’s six stolen bases pace the Braves, and is tied for the second-most steals on the Cape. Whether Chase Fralick (Auburn), Noah Miller (Michigan) or Daniel Jackson (Georgia) start behind the dish, they must prepare for LeGrande to test their pop times.

Chatham Players To Watch

A’s manager Dennis Cook likes guys who take calculated at-bats with a clear plan in mind. For shortstop Isaiah Lane (San Diego), his plan is to see as many pitches as possible. Though his batting clip sits at .143, Lane is showing value by getting on-base with consistency. His .342 OBP ranks fifth on Chatham, and he paces the Anglers with nine walks. Despite the Anglers housing a litany of power bats, their shortstop has been the best at drawing free passes.

Henry Ford (Tennessee) is finding the basepaths with regularity, too, reaching first base at a .348 rate. The Volunteers’ transfer is one of Chatham’s top collegiate players and MLB Draft-eligible prospects, coming off a near-1.000 OPS sophomore campaign at Virginia. His start on the Cape hasn’t been as gaudy, however, with his batting average limited to .231 thus far. Ford’s shown some flashy moments — blasting a homer in Y-D and robbing a long ball at Veterans Field — but all pale in comparison to his game-tying two-run homer Wednesday at Cotuit.

Number To Know: .714

A’s right fielder Jackson Freeman (Northwestern) delivered two of his best performances of the season against the Braves. On June 15 at Bourne, Freeman belted a pair of singles and drew a walk. Then six days later at Veterans Field, he went 1-for-2 with another base on balls. Freeman’s tallied seven plate appearances versus the Braves, and in that span, he’s generated a .714 on-base percentage — the highest of any Chatham player against Bourne so far in 2025.

The Anglers were held to three runs across their opening two meetings with the Braves. To put together a sustained offensive showing Friday, they’ll likely need Freeman to build upon his current 3-for-5 statline against Bourne’s pitching staff.

Last Time They Played

Last Saturday, Chatham hosted Bourne in the two squads’ second matchup of the year. Like the first, the A’s lost the game. Behind a four-run eruption across the third and fourth innings, the Braves handed the Anglers a 6-1 defeat. Chatham committed three errors, mustered five hits and got limited to one extra-base hit, a double from third baseman Gavin Gallaher (UNC).

Petty posted his second consecutive solid start, which came less than a week after his season debut — also against the A’s. The righty struck out six Angler hitters and pitched into the sixth inning, trends that can’t continue if Chatham wants its first victory over Bourne this summer.
