Game 10 Preview: Chatham at Cotuit
CHATHAM, Mass. — After three games of disappointing plate appearances, lackluster pitching performances and five-run deficits, Chatham was so close to pulling it all together on Tuesday.

In the sixth inning against Harwich, the Anglers smacked four hits to produce three runs, giving them a slim one-run lead. Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State) was dominant in his four innings of work, striking out seven Mariners to ensure that gap couldn’t be bridged.

Just an out away from victory in the top of the ninth, pitcher Kaden Smith (TCU) and first baseman Chase Fralick (Auburn) each committed errors on a failed pickoff move, opening the door for Harwich to force extras tied at 3-3. And after giving up four runs in the top of the 10th, the Anglers had to claw back just to escape Veterans Field with a 7-7 tie.

After its dramatic draw against Harwich, Chatham hits the road to take on Cotuit, hoping to end its four-game winless streak.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Chatham’s (2-5-2, East) second matchup of the year against Cotuit (2-7, West) at Lowell Park Wednesday.

Probable Starters

For the Anglers, Mason Peters (Dallas Baptist) will make his second start of the 2025 season against Cotuit. After primarily working in relief at DBU, Peters earned a rotation spot right out of the gate for Chatham, picking up a start against Hyannis. He got through three shutout innings against the Harbor Hawks, but saw his momentum disrupted by a Myles Bailey three-run homer in the fourth. He finished the game with four runs allowed in four innings.

Cotuit, on the other hand, is electing to shake things up in its rotation, starting lefty Payton Manca (Florida State) against the A’s. Manca struggled at FSU this year, notching a poor 6.56 earned run average in 23.1 innings. However, he made a strong relief appearance against Harwich in his Cape Cod Baseball League debut, pitching three shutout innings against the Mariners. Now, Manca will be tasked with making a jump to the rotation against Chatham.

Cotuit Players To Watch

Through nine games, Easton Winfield (Texas) has quickly established himself as a standout bat in his second summer with the Kettleers. Following a standout .960 OPS freshman campaign at Louisiana-Monroe, Winfield disappointed in his stint in Cotuit last summer, hitting for a .626 OPS in 55 at bats. But he has done nothing but impress in his return to the Cape thus far, leading the Kettleers with a .768 OPS in 19 at bats.

Winfield isn’t the only returning Kettleer who’s making waves on the Cape. In his first summer with Cotuit, Jarren Advincula (Cal/transfer) burst onto the scene with a .392 batting average in 130 at bats, claiming the Cape League batting title at season’s end. He’s gotten off to a slower start for Cotuit this year, hitting for a mediocre .692 OPS in seven games. However, the Kettleers’ second baseman still leads the team with a strong .310 average.

Chatham Players To Watch

While he was never one of the most highly-touted Anglers heading into the season, Jackson Freeman (Northwestern) has been a remarkably consistent presence in Chatham’s lineup. He played a crucial role in Chatham’s tie against Harwich, smacking two hits and reaching on a hit by pitch. And thus far, Freeman is one of three Anglers that has both an average greater than .250 and an OPS over .700, with marks of .259 and .708 in those categories, respectively.

Coincidentally, Ace Reese (Mississippi State) is one of those three Anglers, hitting for a .286 average and a .748 OPS through 28 at bats. Both of those marks rank second on the team behind Daniel Jackson (Georgia), and on Tuesday, Reese crushed a three-run homer in extras to ensure Chatham wouldn’t fall to Harwich. With his departure for Team USA rapidly approaching, Anglers fans should try to catch one final glimpse of him while they can.

Number To Know: 11

On Tuesday, the Anglers registered a season-high 11 hits in their tie against Harwich. The last time Chatham notched 11 hits in a game was Aug. 3, 2024, when Chatham slapped 13 hits in a 5-4 victory, also against Harwich.

For weeks now, Anglers manager Dennis Cook has been pleading for his Chatham squad — chock full with Power Four stars — to figure out how to hit the ball. Have the A’s done it yet? Maybe not. But if their performance against Harwich is any indication, they might just be a bit closer to figuring it out than they were a few days ago.

Last Time They Played

Chatham hasn’t found many wins this season, but the A’s snuck out of Veterans Field with a victory the last time these two teams played. On June 19, the Anglers defeated Cotuit 4-2 for their first home win of the season.

Facing a new-look Kettleers squad without longtime manager Mike Roberts in the opposing dugout, Chatham took a lead in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Daniel Jackson (Georgia). From there, Mason Bixby (TCU/transfer) shut the doors on Cotuit to seal Chatham’s second win of the season.
