Game 8 Preview: Chatham at Hyannis
CHATHAM, Mass. — In the past two games, anything that could go wrong, has gone wrong for the Anglers.

Against Yarmouth-Dennis, Chatham was outmatched on all fronts. Its pitchers allowed a season-high nine runs. Its position players committed two sloppy errors, contributing an unearned run to Y-D’s total. And its hitters simply couldn’t see the ball, as they struck out looking a season-worst nine times in the road loss.

After the loss, Anglers manager Dennis Cook met with the A’s near the pitching mound, hoping his words would result in some more inspired play from his squad as they returned to Veterans Field Saturday.

They didn’t. Chatham looked just as flat against Bourne, committing two errors, allowing nine hits and scoring just one run in its 4-1 loss to the Braves. Now, they head back on the road to McKeon Park, where they take on Hyannis hoping to snap their two-game losing streak.

Here’s everything to know before Chatham (2-4-1) heads back on the road to take on Hyannis (4-2-1, West) Sunday.

Probable Starters

The Anglers will assuredly rely on their pitching to secure a win at McKeon Park, and Ryan Borberg (Dallas Baptist) will play a crucial role on the mound for them. Borberg will get his second start of the season against the Harbor Hawks. In his first start against Bourne, Borberg allowed three runs in 3.1 innings, though only one was earned. Having already pitched 80 innings before arriving on the Cape, his inning count may be monitored against Hyannis.

Borberg will be tasked with out dueling Evan Blanco (Virginia), the former teammate of Anglers center fielder Henry Ford. While Blanco had a remarkable 2024, tossing for a 3.63 earned run average in 99.1 innings for the Cavaliers, he floundered last season, notching a 6.23 ERA in 39 innings. He got off to a much better start to his Cape League career, allowing one run in four innings in his Hyannis debut, and he’ll look to continue that momentum against Chatham.

Hyannis Players To Watch

Through seven games of play, there’s no hitter on the Cape hotter than Chris Rembert (Auburn) right now. The Harbor Hawks second baseman leads the CCBL in home runs (three), slugging percentage (.952) and OPS (1.430). He was limited to a disappointing 1-5 day in Chatham’s 7-7 stalemate against Hyannis earlier this season, but he’ll likely contribute much more to the Harbor Hawks’ offensive efforts this time around.

On the other hand, Matthew Miura (Hawaii) contributed plenty to Hyannis’ successful comeback the last time these two teams faced off. He scored a run, notched two hits and smacked an RBI double into right to tie the contest up at 6-6 in the top of the ninth. His numbers aren’t nearly as gaudy as Rembert’s, but his .304 average and .858 OPS are both more than respectable.

Chatham Players To Watch

Since his arrival in Chatham, Gavin Gallaher (North Carolina) has taken over at the hot corner, and he’s done an admirable job so far. After a breakout sophomore season where he hit 17 home runs, notched a 1.013 OPS and claimed Most Outstanding Player honors at the Chapel Hill Regional, he came to Chatham, where he’s hit for a .273 average with three runs in three games thus far.

He hasn’t even arrived in Chatham yet, but Anglers fans should make it a point to watch Chase Fralick (Auburn) when he does. On the Anglers Extra pregame show, Chatham manager Dennis Cook said that Fralick should be arriving Sunday, which means he’ll get in just in time for the A’s road contest against Hyannis. The freshman hit .335 with a .897 OPS for the Tigers, and he’ll provide a stable presence as Chatham’s press box.

Number To Know: 81

It’s difficult to express how disappointing the Anglers offense has been. On Opening Day, Chatham struck out an appalling 17 times against Falmouth. Those issues have only spiraled since.

In their 9-2 loss to Yarmouth-Dennis, the A’s struck out 14 times, nine of which came looking. And the Anglers struck out another 12 times against Bourne on Saturday, bringing their tally to a league-high 81 strikeouts. Chatham just hasn’t put the ball in play, and it’s only exacerbating its offensive issues this season.

Last Time They Played

It may not have been a loss the last time Chatham faced Hyannis, but it sure felt like it. On June 17, 2025, the Anglers got out to a commanding 5-0 lead early on, chasing Harbor Hawks lefty Ethan Plog from the game in the second inning.

But the A’s quickly squandered that advantage. After three scoreless innings, Anglers starter Mason Peters (Dallas Baptist) gave up four runs in the fourth, three of those coming on a Myles Bailey (Florida State) homer. Hyannis then forced extras, and Chatham was ultimately forced to settle for a 7-7 tie.
