Game 3 Preview: Chatham at Yarmouth-Dennis

Chatham travels to Yarmouth-Dennis on Tuesday evening after winning its home-opener against Orleans the night before, facing the Red Sox in a 5 p.m. game at Red Wilson Field. Cy Nielson picked up the win in relief, scattering three hits across three innings and benefiting from Lyle Miller-Green's bases-clearing double in the fifth broke the game open.

Y-D has also opened its season with a tie and a win, as a 5-5 game against Brewster opened its 2021 season and it defeated Harwich, 3-0, the next night. The Mariners generated more baserunners than the Red Sox ' and their pitching struck out 13 hitters ' but two RBI from the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters lifted Yarmouth-Dennis to its first win.

The Anglers haven't lost to Yarmouth-Dennis since July 25, 2018, and have won six games and tied twice over that span.

Probable Pitchers

Aaron Davenport, who led Hawaii with 13 starts as its Friday night starter this past season, will open on the mound for Chatham ' attempting to replicate the three-inning, no-hit performance Austin Vernon threw for the Anglers on Monday.

A junior at Hawaii, Davenport finished 3-6 in 2021 with a 3.74 ERA while striking out 97 batters, including a career-high 13 against Hawaii Pacific on March 4. He picked up where he ended the shortened 2020 season, where he threw six scoreless innings to defeat then-No. 2 Vanderbilt and finished 4-0 through five starts.

Nick Dombkowski will start Yarmouth-Dennis' third game, and the Red Sox have received 10 combined innings of three-run,10-strikeout pitching from their previous two starters. Dombkowski, who has one more season of eligibility at Hartford, started a team-high 10 games in 2021 and finished 4-3 with a team-best 3.13 ERA.

Dombkowski's best start this season came when he threw a no-hitter against Albany and came within two walks and two hit batters of a perfect game ' striking out nine Great Danes across those nine innings. As a junior in 2020, Dombkowski logged three wins and a 0.90 ERA, defeating Stetson, North Florida and The Citadel ' where Chatham third baseman Crosby Jones plays.

Chatham Players to Watch

Johnny Castagnozzi boosted his stock for the Chatham third base position when he entered as a defensive replacement for Crosby Jones in the seventh inning against Orleans and hit a home run the following inning. The North Carolina product has hit .500 through his first four Cape Cod Baseball League at-bats, following up a freshman season at UNC where he started 36 games, hit .239 and drove in 15 runs.

John Michael Faile has struggled at the plate through Chatham's first two games ' hitting .125 with five strikeouts in eight plate appearances ' but his ability to make consistent contact throughout the opening week of practice, often launching balls deep into the gaps or over the Veterans Field fence, drew praise from Chatham manager Tom Holliday. Before the season, Holliday said he planned to alternate Kevin Parada and Faile behind the plate each game, and potentially use the one not catching in the DH slot. Faile, who is draft eligible, hit .438 with 23 home runs at North Greenville this season.

Yarmouth-Dennis Players to Watch

Brooks Lee leads the Red Sox with five hits through their first two games while serving as their shortstop. He just finished his redshirt freshman season at Cal Poly, where he started all but two games and led the Mustangs with a .342 average. Lee has only struck out once on the cape this season after striking out just 34 times across 222 at-bats for Cal Poly.

Andrew Compton, who opened at third base in Yarmouth-Dennis' starting lineup for its first game, sits tied for the team lead in RBI through Monday while also leading the Red Sox in on-base percentage. In his four at-bats, the Georgia Tech sophomore ' and teammate of Chatham's Jake DeLeo, Kevin Parada and Zach Maxwell ' has reached base in three of them, including twice when he was hit by a pitch. Compton appeared in 53 games for the Yellow Jackets, starting 47 of them, and finished with a .294 average and a team-high 13 home runs.

Stat to Know ' 29

Chatham pitchers have struck out 29 opposing batters through its first two games, which leads the Cape League. Daniel Federman and Garrett Crowley, who threw in the season-opener against Falmouth, lead the Anglers with five and six, respectively, and the five pitchers who threw on Monday combined to strike out 14 Orleans batters.

Last Time They Played

Chatham won five games against Yarmouth-Dennis in 2019, and the pair of teams tied in the other meeting. The Anglers' final victory came on July 25 when Kolby Kubichek, Jeremy Wu-Yelland and Hugh Fisher combined to shut down one of the CCBL's top offenses. The Anglers won 4-3 and scored the winning run when Ben Ramirez stole third and scored after the Red Sox catcher's throw bounced past the third baseman into left field.
