Game 22 Preview: Wareham at Chatham
Sunday, Chatham traveled to Harwich to play in its first game since July 3 after a five-day hiatus due to inclement weather.

The Anglers surrendered six runs alone in the first frame but chipped away at the Mariners’ lead quickly, posting two runs in the top of the second inning to draw within four. Matthew Etzel's home run in the top of the fourth tacked on three more runs but Harwich managed to generate a two-score cushion in the bottom of the fourth, defeating the A's. Chatham's six hits equaled Harwich's total as Etzel provided four of the lineup’s five RBIs in a depleting 7–6 loss.

The Anglers will now host Wareham on Monday. The Gatemen are coming off of a 9–1 loss against Hyannis and currently sit at last in the West Division.

Here is what to look out for when Wareham (10–13–2 West) and Chatham (6–14–1 East) square off at Veterans Field.

Probable Starters

Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State): In his first start for Chatham, on June 24, Davis shut out Falmouth in four innings pitched, notching five strikeouts. The Cowboy followed up his scintillating performance six days later when he allowed just two hits to preserve a healthy 8–1 advantage for the Anglers in their eventual win over Harwich.

Brett Wozniak (High Point): Wozniak owns a 5.40 ERA through a lone 1.2-inning relief appearance in a 5–4 loss to Bourne on July 5. The Panther, who is a lefty, fanned three batters and recorded two hits and one earned run.

Chatham Players to Watch

Matthew Etzel (Southern Mississippi): While Chatham is projected to face a lefty, expect Etzel in the lineup. Last time out, Etzel unloaded a three-run homer in the fourth frame at Whitehouse Field for his first of the season. Etzel registered two hits in five at-bats in the matchup, collecting four RBIs in the process.

Kaeden Kent (Texas A&M): Kent, who leads the Anglers in batting average with a .305 clip, produced two hits in three at-bats during Sunday's narrow 7–6 loss to Harwich. The lefty has been lauded by his teammates for good barrel contact, being able to stay in a competitive approach against different types of pitches and having the ability to spray the ball to multiple areas of the field.

Wareham Players to Watch

Nick McLain (Arizona State): In 69 at-bats this summer, McLain’s 20 hits and three home runs lead Wareham, respecitively. The switch hitter didn’t grab a single hit in four at-bats Sunday night, and struck out twice, but is bound to bounce back.

Garen Caulfield (Arizona): Like McLain, Caulfield didn’t tack on a single hit last night either but walked once and scored a run. His .326 batting average leads the Gateman and he boasts an on-base percentage of .420. Caufield has only struck out seven times in 43 at-bats this season.

Number to Know: 2

In the first two rounds of the 2023 MLB Draft, which took place in Seattle, Wash. Sunday night, two former Anglers were selected. The New York Mets selected former Chatham hurler Brandon Sproat, a righty out of Florida, with the 56th overall pick. The Arizona Diamondbacks, meanwhile, took Caden Grice, a hybrid player from Clemson, with the 64th overall pick. Sproat played for the A’s in 2021 while Grice played for them in 2021 and 2022.

Last Time They Played

Chatham hasn’t faced off against Wareham since June 23, when the Gateman topped the Anglers 8–4 at Spillane Field.

Wareham jumped out to a 5–1 lead through the first inning, as Tanner Witt struggled in his first start for Chatham, allowing six earned runs in just one inning pitched. Witt bounced back in his second start, however, on June 30, racking up five strikeouts, one hit and zero earned runs in a 8–1 victory over Harwich.

On June 23, however, the A’s two combined runs in the eighth and ninth frames were not enough to make a full comeback, as Chatham lost the 8–4 decision
