After scoring one run over its past three games, Chatham (4-11-2) is in need of an uplifting performance. The Anglers will attempt to find their first win in six days as they take on Bourne (7-7-3) at 7 p.m. Friday at Veterans Field.
Magnus Ellerts (Florida SouthWestern) is in line for his first start with the Anglers. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has made three appearances, logging a 2.07 ERA in 8.2 innings. His longest outing came against Harwich on June 13, when he allowed one hit and struck out seven over 3.2 innings.
Hunter Furtado will make his season debut with Bourne. The left-hander recorded a 6.47 ERA over 17 relief appearances with Alabama. Prior to joining the Crimson Tide, Furtado pitched with Wake Forest but did not make a start in 22 appearances.
Mitchell Daly (Texas) made his first appearance with the Anglers after being activated Thursday, entering Chatham's 8-1 loss to Yarmouth-Dennis in the top of the seventh. Daly struck out in his only trip to the plate. He provides depth in the middle infield, especially as a right-handed-hitter.
Johnny Castagnozzi (North Carolina) has three hits with Chatham, but two have gone for extra bases, including his game-tying home run to center field against Hyannis on Sunday. The matchup with the left-handed Furtado should favor Castagnozzi on Friday.
Jack Duffy is seventh in the league in batting average, hitting .315 over 54 at-bats. He's hit a minor slump, going 2 for 18 over his past five games, but he added his first home run of the season against Harwich on Wednesday.
Christopher Brito is batting a pedestrian .192 this summer, but the infielder has drawn a league-leading 14 walks, matching his strikeout total and surpassing his hit total. He went 1 for 3 with a walk in Bournes' only matchup with Chatham this season.
The Anglers have struck out 11 or more times in five consecutive games, totalling 66 punchouts over the stretch. To start the streak, Chatham struck out 11 times in each of its seven-inning doubleheader games against Hyannis. The Anglers struck out a season-high 18 times in their shutout loss to Brewster on Tuesday.
In a back-and-forth game, Bourne defeated Chatham 5-4 on June 22 at Doran Park.
With Chatham trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh, Tommy Caufield delivered a pinch-hit RBI single and Roc Riggio (Oklahoma State) plated a run on a fielder's choice, knotting the score at 3-3. Three batters later, Jake DeLeo (Georgia Tech) worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Anglers in front.
Bourne rallied in the bottom of the eighth though, with Dakota Harris' two-out, two-RBI single putting the Braves ahead for good.
