Game 21 Preview: Cotuit at Chatham
Chatham has not played a full contest since Monday. The Anglers suffered a rainout at Orleans on Tuesday and underwent two straight fog-outs at Veterans Field. On Wednesday, the Anglers were tied 5–5 with the Firebirds in the bottom of the fourth inning but the game was ultimately pushed back to July 28 as dense mist devoured the outfield.

Chatham hosted Falmouth on Friday but thick fog delayed the opening pitch by 30 minutes. Eventually, the matchup was postponed to July 18, marking the sixth time this season where the A’s fell victim to inclement weather.

Amid a frustrated crowd, however, Chatham lifted spirits by showcasing an intrasquad home run derby in place of its cancellation against the Commodores. Players were split into two teams, captained by Austin Peay’s Lyle Miller-Green and Oklahoma State’s Nolan Schubart. Each player was given 20 seconds to hit, and Miller-Green’s side pulled out a narrow 7–6 win.

The Anglers face Cotuit on Saturday. Though Chatham hasn’t completed a full nine innings in nearly a week, it last beat Harwich 10–6 on Monday. The Kettleers, meanwhile, are on a two-game winning streak after snagging victories over Falmouth and Hyannis.

Here’s everything you need to know before the A’s (6–13–1 East) take on Cotuit (16–7–0 West).

Probable Pitchers

Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State): In his first start for Chatham, on June 24, Davis shut out Falmouth in four innings pitched, notching five strikeouts. The Cowboy followed up his scintillating performance six days later when he allowed just two hits to preserve a healthy 8–1 advantage for the Anglers in their eventual win over Harwich.

Izaak Martinez (San Diego): Through four appearances this season, Martinez has allowed three earned runs in five innings pitched. The lefty’s picked up two wins and five strikeouts along the way and last featured in relief against the Commodores in a 3–2 win.

Chatham Players To Watch

Zach MacDonald (Miami Ohio): Initially sharpied in for his first Chatham start on Saturday before the infamous fog hit, MacDonald totaled 13 home runs and 35 RBIs with the RedHawks this past season. He also managed a .251 batting average and garnered 53 total hits.

Trace Willhoite (Lipscomb): Another newcomer for the A’s, Willhoite enjoyed a career-best year with Lipscomb in 2023. The rising junior tallied 66 RBIs with a .309 batting average through 62 games this season in the Atlantic Sun Conference and helped lead the Bisons to an NCAA Regional appearance.

Cotuit Players To Watch

Cole Mathis (Charleston): Mathis suits up as both a pitcher and a hitter for Cotuit. While he won’t start on the mound against Chatham, the righty’s produced 11 RBIs and four home runs this season at the plate. Last time out, Mathis’ homer in the top of the eighth inning against Hyannis fueled an 8–6 come-from-behind win.

Ryan Galanie (Wofford): Galanie holds a team-high 12 RBIs but has also struck out 13 times. Nevertheless, his three home runs this summer is good for second-best on the squad, only behind Mathis. On Friday, Galanie presented a two-RBI performance in the Kettleers’ victory over the Harbor Hawks.

Number To Know: 20

Chatham has played the fewest amount of games in the Cape Cod Baseball League this season. Its 20 games are two less than the closest competitor and is a direct product of the ever-consistent rain and fog. The Anglers’ six canceled contests are the most of any team in 2023 and has already led to the removal of five scheduled rest days.

Last Time They Played

On June 18, Cotuit defeated Chatham 6–2 behind two consecutive multi-run innings in the third and fourth frames. For the Anglers, starting pitcher Parker Smith gave up four earned runs before Carlos Rey took his place in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Offensively, the Anglers struggled against Cotuit reliever Camron Hill, who totaled six strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Though Kaeden Kent and Tate Ballestero tacked on a run, respectively, in the final two frames, Chatham’s comeback attempt came too little too late.
