Notebook: Game 28 @ Harwich

Chatham, Mass. — Reeling from three losses in their past four games, the Chatham Anglers look to get back in the win column tonight when they visit the Harwich Mariners at 6:30 p.m.

Chatham (11-15-1) entered the month of July one game under .500, but has since gone 3-6-1 and now sits tied for last place in the East Division. The Mariners (16-9-2) similarly enter tonight’s contest on an uncommon four-game winless streak. Since defeating Bourne back on July 6, Harwich has gone 0-2-2, watching as its stranglehold on the East Division has been whittled down to a mere two points.

The two teams met on Sunday at Veterans Field, where they played to a 1-1 tie in 12 innings. Today's game will be the fourth of six games played between the Anglers and the Mariners. Both teams are 1-1-1 in the previous three contests.

At the Plate: Hagen Owenby ranks fourth in batting average for the Anglers in the past seven days. The catcher, who reached base twice last night, has hit .273 in his last five games with Chatham. After winning the College Home Run Derby on July 3 with 46 homers, Owenby returned to the CCBL, looking to bring his bat to an inconsistent Anglers’ offense.

Since rejoining Chatham against his former team, the Cotuit Kettleers, on July 5, Owenby has driven in two runs on three hits, while scoring another. Yesterday, the East Tennessee State University product launched a solo home run to right-center that gave Chatham an early 3-0 lead.

Owenby is currently batting a combined .205 this summer, a product of his average with both the Anglers and the Kettleers.

Pavin Smith is one of four Mariners to hit over .300 this week, entering tonight’s contest at .318. The University of Virginia Cavalier has reached base in every game this month, save for a 3-0 loss to Yarmouth-Dennis on July 1. Against Chatham on Sunday, Smith went 2-for-6 with a double and a strikeout.

On the Rubber: The Anglers will send Andrew Karp (0-1) to the mound for the third start of the season for the Florida State Seminole. In his last outing – against Cotuit on July 5 – Karp went five full innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and a walk. The right-hander struck out two batters in the contest.

Karp pieced together a stellar outing in his CCBL debut back on June 28. Facing the then-first place Wareham Gatemen, Karp allowed one hit to the 13 batters he faced in four shutout innings. He struck out five on the night.

Tyler Wilson (1-1) aims for a win in the southpaw’s first start in the month of July. Allowing four earned runs over the span of two games earlier this season, Wilson has crafted a 4.00 ERA. The Palmer, Mass. native has struck out eight of the 40 batters he has faced, while allowing 13 hits and issuing two walks. Starting for a Harwich pitching staff that has allowed a league-low 55 runs, Wilson’s ERA is the highest amongst any starter for the Mariners.

Down the Road: The Anglers, along with the rest of the CCBL, will have their second off day of the week tomorrow. On Friday, Chatham visits rival Orleans for a 7 p.m. contest with the Firebirds.
