Game 22 Preview: Chatham at Bourne
On Tuesday, Chatham manager Tom Holliday officially announced his resignation from the ballclub, 21 games into the 2023 season due to personal health reasons. Assistant coach Marty Lees has been named as acting manager for the remainder of the summer.

Last time out, Chatham experienced its fourth consecutive fog-out at Veterans Field. On Monday, with just one out in the top of the first inning, home umpire Jeff Kinney issued two fog delays before suspending the game. The A’s will resume their contest against the Gatemen at 1 p.m. on July 18 and are scheduled to face Falmouth at 7 p.m. after in a double-header.

Lees' first game at the helm will take place when Chatham plays Bourne for the third time this season. In their two prior meetings, the Braves have won by a collective score of 19–3. Bourne currently sits at second in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s West Division but are coming off a 6–4 loss to Hyannis. The Anglers, on the other hand, last played at Harwich on Sunday in a 7–6 defeat.

Here’s everything you need to know before Chatham (6–14–1 East) travels to Bourne (14–11–1 West).

Probable Starters

Jack Seppings (Brown): Seppings made his Anglers debut on July 3 and produced five strikeouts in a 10–6 win over Harwich. At Brown this past season, Seppings finished with a 4.38 ERA across 52 innings pitched.

Bryce Cunningham (Vanderbilt): Cunningham has already faced Chatham, notching five strikeouts in four innings pitched during an 8–2 win on June 28. Through two total appearances this summer, Cunningham boasts a 1.03 ERA.

Chatham Players To Watch

Jayden Melendez (Pittsburgh): Named a starter in Monday’s game against Wareham, Melendez’s Chatham debut was spoiled by the fog. With the Panthers in 2023, Melendez registered a .269 batting average, 15 RBIs and seven home runs.

Liam Paddack (Spokane Community College): A likely choice to relieve Seppings on Wednesday, Paddack has allowed just three runs in 10 innings pitched. On June 23, Paddack put up a season-high four strikeouts at Wareham.

Bourne Players To Watch

Derek Bender (Coastal Carolina): Bender’s .382 batting average leads the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer and his 13 RBIs are tied for a team best. In 18 games, Bender’s tacked on three home runs but hasn’t left yard in Bourne’s last 10 contests.

Jonathan Vastine (Vanderbilt): Vastine joins Bender with 13 RBIs and has totaled 18 hits this season. When Chatham last played Bourne on June 28, Vastine managed to get on base in all four of his at-bats, producing an RBI along with three walks.

Number To Know: 7

Bourne has beaten Chatham in the two sides’ last seven matchups. The last time the Anglers defeated the Braves was on July 11, 2021, when they won 5–2. Since then, the A’s have slumped to two ties and five losses. In 2023, Chatham is 0–2 against Bourne.

Last Time They Played

The Anglers suffered its third consecutive loss in an 8–2 defeat at Bourne on June 28. Chatham starter Miles Langhorne shut out the Braves in the opening two innings but crumbled in the third, giving up three runs.

Though Chatham tacked on a score in the top of the fourth inning, Bourne’s four-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth put the game to rest.

In an effort to save his bullpen, then-manager Holliday opted to place right fielder Lyle Miller-Green on the mound in the bottom of the eighth to close out the matchup.
