Offense Continues Dominance, Anglers beat Lowly Wareham
The Chatham Anglers (23-9-1) brought their hot-hitting and three-game winning streak to Spillane Field to take on the struggling Wareham Gatemen, and continued swinging the bat well, cruising to an 8-4 victory.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Anglers jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning. This time, Brandon Sedell (Nova Southeastern) came in with the bases loaded, then cleared the bases with a two-out double that gave the Anglers an early 3-0 lead.
"I am just simplifying my at-bats," Sedell said. "Im going into every at-bat with a clear mind, and I don't let the last at-bat affect me."
Over the past four appearances for Sedell, he has collected seven hits and seven RBI.
"He has gotten better, plain and simple," Manager John Schiffner said. "When we have guys like him step up and start hitting the ball well, we are pretty set offensively."
Wareham got on the board in their half of the first inning, as Tino Lipson scored from third base when Sedell attempted to catch Christopher Chinea from stealing second.
Chatham exploded for four more runs in the second inning behind a two-run home run from Michael Russell (North Carolina), his first of the season, a RBI sac-fly from J.D Davis (Cal State Fullerton), and an RBI single from Sedell.

Matt Gage (Siena) went five strong innings and picked up his
fourth win in his last four starts.
For the third-consecutive game, the Anglers offense scored six or more runs in the first two innings.
"We just have good hitters," Sedell said. "We are getting in hitter's counts, squaring the ball up well, and doing what we are supposed to do."
While the offense stole the show again, the Anglers pitching staff kept the Wareham bats at bay, led by All-Star left-hander Matt Gage (Siena).
Gage collected his fourth win in as many starts, stifling the Gatemen offense over five strong innings, striking out two and only allowing two runs. After being selected to the Eastern Division on Saturday, Gage proved why he belonged there.
"Great effort from him," Schiffner said. "Thats why he is an All-Star."
For Gage, pitching with the potent Anglers offense behind him is simple.
"When we are swinging the bats well, all I have to do is pitch to contact, and let our defense play behind me," Gage said.
Chatham added another run in the sixth inning on Davis second sac-fly of the game, giving them a 8-2 lead. Wareham came back with two runs in the next frame off of reliever Jimmy Litchfield (UC Irvine), but could muster no more, as Chatham walked away with the 8-4 victory.
Mitchell Gunsolus (Gonzaga) and Dante Flores (USC) set the table for the Anglers offense from the top two spots in the lineup. Gunsolus had four hits and scored two runs, while Flores went two-for-four with two runs scored.
"They really set it up for the rest of the offense," Schiffner said. "When we can get them on base, the rest of our lineup can drive them in."
Ryan Leach (Franklin Pierce) did not allow a hit through two innings of relief, striking out three along the way. Mitch Merten (UC Irvine) came in and closed the door on the Gatemen, giving Chatham their league-best 23rd win of the 2013 season.
With Chathams win and last-place Brewsters 5-0 loss to Hyannis, the Anglers now sit on the precipice of clinching their spot in the Cape League Playoffs. One more win for Chatham, or one more loss for the Whitecaps, will secure a playoff berth for the Anglers.
With a potent offense, great starting rotation, and shut-down bullpen, the Anglers are a force to be reckoned with.
"We have got a lot of guys who are hot right now," Schiffner said. "We are clicking on all cylinders right now, and we are pretty tough to beat."
