Raley adds solid glove, bat heading into Brewster game

Three days ago Cory Raley (Texas Tech) got off of a plane in Boston and felt a blast of fresh air.

“It feels great up here,” said Raley, who is used to the Texas climate. “I think it was like 66 degrees heading out here, and I just rolled the windows down and enjoyed it.”

But the refreshment for Raley didn’t stop at a mere blast of cool air; he got to do something that he hasn’t done in over a month—play baseball. The new kid on the block played in both games of Chatham’s doubleheader against Hyannis. He reached base three times, and drew a pivotal RBI walk in the top of yesterday’s final inning. He also flashed some leather in the field to help the Anglers get out of a couple jams.

“He made two really good plays in the field,” said Manager John Schiffner. “He can play second base, he can swing the bat a little bit, and he’s a great kid.”

Raley will surely help to add infield depth to the Angler roster. The second baseman led the Red Raiders in batting average (.350) and tied for the lead in hits (64) during 2015. He will join a cast of characters including Nate Mondou (Wake Forest), Zack Short (Sacred Heart), and Todd Czinege (Villanova), who have all already played multiple positions, including second base.

This evening, the Anglers (8-5) will enlist at least some of those individual’s services against the Brewster Whitecaps (6-7) for a 7 p.m. matchup at Veterans Field. Chatham and Brewster have split the season series thus far, with each team taking one game.

The probable Chatham starter is Zac Gallen (North Carolina). He has struck out seven batters and has not allowed an earned run in his first four innings this season. His likely counterpart is Hunter Martin (Tennessee). Martin has not received a decision and has a 2.61 ERA through his first two summer starts.
