Pitching leads Chatham by Hyannis, 3-1

Pitching leads Chatham by Hyannis, 3-1

In the top of the fifth inning Hyannis base runner Ben DeLuzio (Florida State) tried to move from second to third on a fly out to deep center field. As the ball came falling out of the sky into Trenton Brooks’ (Nevada) glove, the Chatham outfielder started moving in towards the infield. He knew he had him.

“I was kind of surprised that he left,” said Brooks. “When he did, I put an average throw on and Shorty put a good tag on him."

Brooks' laser to Zack Short (Sacred Heart) killed Hyannis’ (8-5) best late-inning chance, and Chatham (8-5) went on to complete the doubleheader sweep by a score of 3-1.

Zack Short (Sacred Heart) hit his second home run of the year for the Anglers on Monday.

On the hill, Ty Damron (Texas Tech) provided the Anglers the pitching they needed in his second start of the summer. Damron allowed one runner to score in the first frame but was unsolvable after that. He went on to throw five innings of one-run baseball, giving up only two hits and a walk while striking out four.

“That was a great job,” said Manager John Schiffner. “Really, really nice job. That’s what I was expecting from him.”

Damron has given up three earned runs over his first 10 innings on the Cape.

On the other side of the ball the Chatham offense cracked the scoreboard with two runs in the second inning. Zack Short (Sacred Heart) led the inning off with a solo shot to left field. A Luke Persico (UCLA) double and a Kyle Brooks (North Florida) single then set up a Trenton Brooks (Nevada) RBI single for the second run.

“Zack has got some quick bat speed,” said Schiffner. “He’s played great for us so far—short or third—no matter where he’s been.”

The other run came as a result of patient batting from the newest Angler, Cory Raley (Texas Tech). With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Raley worked a walk to bring in an insurance tally.

“I was just trying to see it deep,” said Raley. “I haven’t seen live pitching in, I think about a month now.”

The Angler bullpen went on the hold the Harbor Hawks in the final two frames of the seven-inning affair. C.J. Burdick (San Diego) did not allow a hit during the sixth inning. Aaron McGarity (Virginia Tech) nailed down the save in the seventh inning.

Schiffner: “I’d put this bullpen against anybody in the league.”

Chatham next hosts Brewster on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
