Anglers' Weekly Report: 6/15

Anglers' Weekly Report: 6/15

The kids are still in school, the sharks aren’t back, and the warm air certainly isn’t here yet, but the first week of baseball is in the books for the Chatham Anglers (4-2). Recap this week’s play and see the schedule of next week’s games below.

Andre Scrubb recorded his first save of the year on Sunday.

From The Skipper:

“The pitching staff has been very, very good, the hitting has been good, and the defense has been very, very good,” said Manager John Schiffner on The Manager’s Show Sunday morning.  “I’d give us a B/ B+. I’m very pleased right now-- right now things are coming together nicely.”

In the Standings:

The Anglers finished this week 2nd in the Eastern Division, two points behind the Orleans Firebirds (5-2). They are one point ahead of the Harwich Mariners (3-3-1) and two points ahead of the Brewster Whitecaps (3-3) and Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (3-4). The Hyannis Harbor Hawks (6-1) are the only team in the West Division with a better record than the Anglers.

On the Hill:

Parker Dunshee (Wake Forest) dazzled in his Cape Cod Baseball League debut against the Cotuit Kettleers (3-4) on Saturday afternoon. The right-hander threw only 57 pitches in five scoreless innings to earn his first Chatham victory. Jim McDade (Millersville), James Mulry (Northeastern), and T.J. Zeuch (Pittsburgh) accounted for the other three wins. C.J. Burdick (San Diego) and Andre Scrubb (High Point) each recorded their first saves. Opposing teams managed only a .238 batting average and 2.87 runs per nine innings against the Chatham pitching staff this week.

At the Plate:

Getting the leadoff man on base is key, and Trenton Brooks (Nevada) is opening a lot of doors for the Anglers. The left-handed hitter has been staying behind the ball and taking it the other way to a tune of 8 hits in sixteen at-bats. Brooks’ .500 batting average is the best on the Cape in the early going. Zack Short (Sacred Heart) recorded the Anglers’ only home run on Saturday and is the team leader with five RBIs. Will Craig (Wake Forest) leads the squad with three walks. In total, Chatham is hitting .249 and has an on-base percentage of .313. Both of those statistics are good for fourth on the Cape.

The Week Ahead:

Tuesday: Chatham @ Harwich 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday: Harwich @ Chatham 7 p.m.

Thursday: Brewster @ Chatham 7 p.m. (make-up game)

Friday: Cotuit @ Chatham 7 p.m.

Saturday: Bourne @ Chatham 7 p.m.
