Kyle Adams' double lifts Chatham over Falmouth in first game

Kyle Adams' double lifts Chatham over Falmouth in first game

Kyle Adams (Richmond) didn’t have a hit going into the bottom of the second inning on Sunday afternoon. Then he pounced on an 0-1 fastball.

Thomas Jankins made his first Chatham start on Sunday.

“He tried to come inside with a fastball, and I just tried to be aggressive,” said Adams. “It definitely feels good to get that first hit out of the way, especially in a big spot early in the game.”

Garrett Hampson (Long Beach State) set up the at-bat with a bunt that moved two runners into scoring position, and Adams followed with a two-run double. The sequence was the difference in a 6-4 Chatham (4-1) victory over Falmouth (2-4) on Sunday afternoon. The game was the first half of a doubleheader between the two squads, and as such it was a seven-inning contest.

“[The Adam’s at-bat] was a great at-bat,” said Manager John Schiffner. “That was real baseball right there. You bunt to put the men on second and third with less than two outs, and Kyle came through with the big hit.”

Though the Chatham pitchers surrendered four runs in seven innings, they also put on a strike-out clinic. Thomas Jankins (Quinnipiac) made his first start for Chatham and hung five Ks in three innings. Brandon Miller (Millersville) came on for the next two frames, and he sent four more Commodores back to the dugout empty-handed. James Mulry (Northeastern) claimed two more strike-out victims in the sixth inning. The Chatham staff finished with 11 strikeouts in total.

“I think all of our pitchers were getting ahead early in the count, and that set up the breaking ball and the changeup,” said Adams, who also caught the game. “These guys can really locate the ball."

Jankins left with the lead, but he did not throw the minimum four innings to record the win in the shortened game. Mulry was awarded the win on a scorer’s decision, and Andre Scrubb (High Point) saved the two-run victory in the final frame.

“It feels great that I could help the team could get the win today,” said Scrubb. “Playing on the Cape has been a dream of mine. It’s just awesome being there.”

Trenton Brooks (Nevada) and Zack Short (Sacred Heart) also had an RBI each in the game.

Chatham will play the second half of the double header at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
