Draw! A's Tie Whitecaps Again

by Kyle Whitehead, 07-20-2007

Draw! A's Tie Whitecaps Again Friday was a day of not enough offense and not enough daylight for Chatham as the A's tied the Brewster Whitecaps for the second time this season, 2-2, at Stony Brook Field.

Chatham jumped out in front with two in the first off Brewster starter Matt Couch (San Diego). Addison Johnson (Clemson) and Kyle Seager (UNC) led off the game with back-to-back doubles to score the first run. After Couch got the first two outs of the ballgame, Tim Federowicz (UNC) came up with a clutch RBI single to score Seager and give Chatham an early 2-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the A's, that was all the offense they would manage on the day.

Starter Charles Brewer (UCLA) did his best to make the lead hold. The righty scattered three hits over 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run while walking three and striking out four. His only trouble came in the sixth, his final inning of work.

Blake Tekotte (Miami) got the ball rolling with a one out walk. He then stole his Cape League leading sixteenth stolen base and scored on a Jacob Priday (Missouri) base hit to plate the first Brewster run. Mitch Houck (Central Florida) relieved Brewer and got the final out to preserve the 2-1 lead, at least for the moment.

After Kevin Couture (USC) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, Rob Wooten (UNC) came in and ran into trouble in the eighth. Michael Marseco (Stanford) and Tekotte led off with back-to-back singles and moved up a base on a Tavo Hall (San Francisco) groundout. Manager John Schiffner then intentionally walked Yonder Alonso (Miami), the Cape's fifth best hitter, to load the bases with one out.

After the walk, Priday came to the plate in another key situation and the Missouri designated hitter came through again. He drove a pitch to deep right that plated Marseco and tied the score at 2.

After three more innings and no more runs for either team, the game was called with 11 complete and the A's had their third tie of 2007.

Couch and three Whitecap relievers kept the A's offense at bay after the two run first. After three hits in the first, the A's scattered six hits over the final 10 innings.

Chatham returns to Veteran's Field to take on the Cotuit Kettleers Saturday night at 7pm. The A's have split their first two contests with the Kettleers.
