A's Win 5-4 in 11

by Mike Toper, 07-16-2007

A's Win 5-4 in 11 Chatham blew a 4-1 in the ninth but responded in extra innings with a walkoff 5-4 victory in 11 over rival Orleans Sunday night at Veteran's Field.

The win was Chatham's fourth in as many tries against Orleans in 2007.

Addison Johnson (Clemson) led off the bottom of the first with a single. After a stolen base and a Scott Lyons (Arkansas) groundout, Jermaine Curtis (UCLA) grounded out 4-3 to score Johnson, giving the A's a 1-0 lead. The very next batter, Zach Putnam (Michigan), blasted a solo home run to give Chatham a two-run lead.

In the top of the third inning Alden Carrithers (UCLA) reached base on an E-6 and scored on a single by Dennis Raben (Miami) two batters later, bringing the Cardinals within one.

The A's responded in the bottom of the inning, when Tim Federowicz (UNC) batted an RBI single to score Scott Lyons from third putting the home team up 3-1. Federowicz would not be finished for the day.

After Chatham scored another run in the fifth, both offenses seemed to be dorment. For the A's, Tom Milone (USC) was brilliant. He went six innings, allowing only one run and striking out six batters. Rob Wooten (UNC) made a fantastic relief appearance, pitching two innings and not allowing a run.

The top of the ninth is when things got dicey.

Nate Frieman (Duke) singled with one out, and after reliever Bryan Shaw (Long Beach St.) walked a batter and issued a hit by pitch, the bases were loaded. Alex White (UNC) came in the stop the bleeding, but he allowed an RBI single and walked in another run to cut the Cardinals' deficit to 4-3. With one out, Ollie Linton (UC Irvine) came in to pop a sac fly and plate the tying run. Following another walk, White struck out Eric Reese (Fordham) for the final out.

Playing two scoreless extra innings apparently was enough for Chatham. Federowicz led off the bottom of the eleventh with a single, and after an Allan Dykstra (Wake Forest) single and a walk by Kevin McAvoy (Maine), Kyle Seager came to bat looking to end the 4-4 contest. On an 0-1 count he smacked an infield hit that was midhandled by the Orleans shortstop, scoring Federowicz and ending the game on an E-6, 5-4.

The A's improve to 14-11-2 and take over sole possesion of second place in the Eastern division. Kevin Couture (USC) gets the win for Chatham.
