Batter Up! A's Pummel Red Sox 11-5

by Kyle Whitehead, 07-13-2007

Batter Up! A's Pummel Red Sox 11-5 A game and a half ago, it seemed liked nothing could go right for the A's. Now, after two straight wins over Y-D, nothing seems to be able to go wrong.

Chatham followed up a thrilling 12-11 home win over the Red Sox with another offensive explosion in an 11-5 victory Friday night at Red Wilson Field.

The A's have scored 23 runs in their last two ballgames, both wins over the Eastern Division leading Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

A six-run fifth broke the game open for Chatham. Leading 3-2, the A's sent nine men to the plate and came away with six runs on five hits. Andrew Crisp (South Carolina) doubled to leadoff the inning and moved to third on an Addison Johnson (Clemson) fielders choice groundout. Scott Lyons (Arkansas) then singled to drive in the fourth run of the game for Chatham.

After Jermaine Curtis (UCLA) singled, Allan Dykstra (Wake Forest) walked to load the bases, which chased Y-D starter Shawn Sanford (South Florida) from the game. In came D.J. Mauldin (Cal Poly), who could not stop the bleeding.

Tim Federowicz (UNC) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Sean O'Brien (Virginia Tech) drove in two more with a double to stretch the Chatham lead to 6-2. The next batter, Zach Putnam (Michigan), came to the plate with a chance to break the game open and he did not disappoint.

Putnam blasted Mauldin's offering way over the leftfield fence to give the A's a comfortable 9-2 lead they would not relinquish.

Charles Brewer (UCLA) got the start for the A's and was terrific in six innings of work. Brewer allowed three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two.

Curtis got the A's on the board early with a three-run homerun in the top of the first, his second three-run shot in as many days.

Chatham pushed two more across in the ninth on RBIs from Lyons and Federowicz for good measure. Out of the pen, Rob Wooten (UNC) pitched two scoreless innings and Mitch Houck (Central Florida) worked through trouble in the ninth to preserve the win.

The A's are on the road again tomorrow to take on the Commodores at 5:30pm. Falmouth throws Christian Friedrich (Eastern Kentucky) against Chatham's Cliff Springston (Arkansas).
