Notebook: Chatham heads to Hyannis winners of 3 straight

Chatham (11-9-1) hadn’t gone on a three-game winning streak before Saturday night, but beat Brewster (8-13), 7-2, to accomplish the elusive feat. The Anglers utilized timely hitting and a strong performance from starter Max Tisman (Wake Forest), and will look to carry that collective effort into their game against Hyannis (10-11) at McKeon Park at 6 p.m. Sunday.

At the plate

While Chatham sprinkled three additional runs onto its final line, it was a four-run bottom of the fourth that propelled it past the Whitecaps. Patient at-bats and good situational hitting highlighted the frame, with a two-run double from Kevin Fagan (Stetson) at the center of the rally. Fagan, who hit in the nine hole, was part of a strong effort from the bottom third of the Anglers’ lineup. He went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a walk. Landon Cray (Seattle), hitting eighth, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Nick Collins (Georgetown), hitting seventh, went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. A home run by Ty Moore (UCLA) in the seventh was the only run of the game that didn’t involve one of Fagan, Cray or Collins.

“I am definitely starting to feel good at the plate and am having the at-bats I want,” said Collins, who has now collected a hit in his last five games. “We all were hitting well and got hits when it mattered most.”

A.J. Murray (Georgia Tech), who has the most hits in the Cape Cod Baseball League, extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 1-for-3 night and bumped his season average to .359.

On the mound

For the fourth time in as many starts, Tishman put his team in a position to win. He found himself in a few jams early in the game, but used his breaking ball and competitiveness to work out of them with only one run to his name. He earned the winning decision to improve his record to 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA, his final line reading six innings and one earned on eight hits and no walks. He also struck out four.

“I felt like I was throwing everything well,” he said. “I was able to get stuff over and had my command and like always I was energetic and tried to stay pumped up.”

Tishman was followed by Jeff Burke (Boston College), who left runners on and had Brewster’s second and final run charged to him after leaving the game. Lou Distasio (Rhode Island) worked effectively out of a jam in the seventh and quickly through his own inning in the eighth, and Zack Burdi (Louisville) capped the night with an emphatic strikeout of John Sansone.

“We got good stuff from our bullpen,” Chatham manager John Schiffner said. “That’s always good to see even if the game isn’t all that close.”

Up next

Now the Anglers will travel to Hyannis for the first time this season for their second meeting with the Harbor Hawks. The first time was at Veterans Field on June 29, and a walk-off home run by Murray gave Chatham the 5-4 win in the the bottom of the 12th. Charlie Dant (Dayton) is expected to start for the Anglers, and will look to improve upon his 1-0 record and even 3.00 ERA in two starts. Iowa’s Blake Hickman will take the mound for Hyannis, and comes into the game with a 1-1 record and 4.15 ERA in three starts.
