Mets Shutout A's 3-0

by Kyle Whitehead, 07-11-2007

Mets Shutout A's 3-0 In their first two games against Hyannis, pitching was the problem. This time the bats fell silent against the Mets as Chatham was shutout for the first time this season, losing 3-0 Wednesday night at McKeon Park.

The loss was the A's third in as many tries against the Mets in 2007.

Bryce Stowell (UC-Irvine) was the man chiefly responsible. Stowell pitched seven shutout innings, scattering three hits while walking one and striking out eight.

Hyannis got all the offense they needed in the second off Chatham starter Trey Watten (Abilene Christian), who was making his first start of the year. With the bases loaded and one out, Hyannis centerfielder David Macias (Vanderbilt) hit a chopper to Allan Dykstra (Wake Forest) at first. Dykstra, thinking about throwing home, hesitated. By the time he looked to first, it was too late and everybody was safe on the infield single. The Mets pushed another run across when Watten walked Ryan Jackson (Miami) with the bases loaded to give Hyannis a 2-0 lead.

Watten left the game after three innings and was replaced by Alex White (UNC). The Tarheel did a tremendous job in long relief in what was only his third appearance of the season. White pitched the final five innings, allowing only one run on five hits while walking one and striking out six.

The only blemish on White's night was an RBI single by James Darnell in the seventh that gave Hyannis a 3-0 lead.

Offensively, the A's never managed more than one baserunner in an inning. Dykstra had two of Chatham's three hits, both singles.

The A's look to bounce back tomorrow at home against the first place Y-D Red Sox. Nathan Moreau (Georgia) will be on the bump for Chatham, opposed by Eddie Burns (Georgia Tech).
